Hi there. I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetes/glucose intolerant and had my first discussion with the practise Nurse today. I have been working hard on my low carbs and exercise and have lost 9lbs in a month. She offered me Orlistat to speed things up with my weight loss but I have declined it. Technically my BMI (as of last month) put me in the obesity category but as a size 16 I never considered myself as that, overweight agreed. I am following Patrick Holfords "Say No to Diabetes" which makes huge sense to me and is clearly working. He is very anti this drug as it impairs the absorption of calcium, Vit D, A and essential healthy fats. How can such a drug be good for me as a post hysterectomy woman needing to protect my bones?!! Has anyone else been prescribed this? Seems daft to me.

My teenage daughter (then, about 8 years ago) was prescribed this to try and help with weight loss - she has a rare syndrome that causes insatiable hunger and often, life-threatening obesity. She is also a type 2 on insulin and has been for years.
I would avoid touching this med at all costs. It makes little difference to weight loss and the side effects are just awful. It sends any fat you may eat on a short cut through your digestive system, not being absorbed by the gut and straight out the other end. The result is practically uncontrollable bright yellow oily diarrhoea and this results from ANY fat eaten, even the smallest amount. I wouldn't touch it with the proverbial barge pole, your life will revolve around trying to avoid "accidents" - and that is practically impossible.

And that's on top of what you already know. Maybe nursey would like to try it for herself, see how it affects her and then see if she still thinks it's a good idea;)

Cheers for that advice. I thought as much. Just don't see how it can do you good. Natural weight loss is much better surely?

9lbs in a month and she wants to "speed" it up? She's an idiot. Natural every time Sally, you're doing just fine.
