Hi, this is the first time joining forum and its amazing to see many type 1 sharing their experiences.

I have been living with type 1 diabetes for more than 16 years and my readings have always been up and down. recently my condition got worst and everyday feels lethargic. i want to do something about it because its affecting my universities studies.

i feel one of the main "culprit" is my diet and want change my diet. Does anyone have tips to share?

Hi @qijun6699
Sorry to hear you're feeling so rough...it can be quite draining when your blood sugars are so erratic. Are you carb counting? Have you done any basal testing? Could it be that your carb/insulin ratio needs tweaking?

Personally after years of following the NHS guidelines I have discovered LCHF which has really worked for me in terms of controlling the highs and lows...it can take a bit of forward planning though...so its not for everyone.

Hi, as well as answering the post above it may be useful to share what kind of meals you eat and what you bg readings tend to be

One of the first questions on suffering with very up and down diabetes is to go away and reconfirm that you are using the right amount of basal insulin: http://www.mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/

If your basal is out, then your insulin:carb ratio won't work effectively and you exacerbate any ups and downs.

Once you've done this, you can confirm your ratios. Once those are good, then you can also look at diet.

The simplest way to modify the way your body reacts to diet is to reduce the amount of carbohydrate that you eat. Note, I'm not saying choose a low carb higher fat diet, just that by reducing the amount of carbs you reduce the amount of variation in both insulin and carbs.

But first things first. Make sure your insulins are set right as that can be a key issue.

Hi and welcome. Can you just confirm that you are on Basal/Bolus and are carb-counting? Yes, do let us know you typical meal patterns.

Hi! Thank you so much for the response! I guess i will start with my basal check first.

Ah yes, I do basal/bolus and carb-counting. basal: lantus 10 units in the afternoon 12pm. weight is 101 pounds. trying to also increase weight but hasn't been any successful. (that's another issue)

typical meal pattern:
breakfast: wholemeal bread, butter spread
typical bg: 162 to 234 mg/dl

lunch: noodles, rice, vegetables (non-carb types), proteins like chicken and fish
post readings: 180 to 270 mg/dl

dinner: same as lunch
post readings: around 180 mg/dl
