I am in the first day of changing from a Mixtard 30 only regime to Levemir and NovoRapid.. so far so good.. I have also been prescribed metmofin as I have some insulin resistance. Now I have been doing some reading on-line about the effect of metmofin in type 1 diabetics and the general consensus is that it should have a reasonable effect on the amount of levemir I need to use... perhaps reducing it by as much as 20%.. What I can't seem to find anywhere is information showing how quickly it is going to have an effect on a type 1 individual?

Does anyone have an experience using metmofin as a type 1? after how long did you see a reduction in the amount if basal insulin you required? did it have any effect on the amount of rapid acting you needed (I have found some forum posts that suggest it can do?)...

Would just like to arm myself with as much info as possible before I start to pop these pills!

Hi,
Why has your doc diagnosed you with insulin resistance? You're on synthetic insulins, maybe they just don't work for you- that's the case for many people. Have you thought of trying animal insulin instead?
Lots of people find they're ok in Lantus, Levemir, etc until they run into probs months or years down the line; BGs going haywire, supected insulin resistance, etc.
It puzzles me that docs are so quick to prescribe Metformin to type-1s, and this is a very recent occurance, and co-incides with the introduction of analogue insulins.
I've been type-1 for over 21 years, and the one time I was suspected to be insulin resistant, it was the fault of the medication and not my body's failings. A change to animal insulin proved it.
Jus :)
