I went for a growth scan this week. They said the amnio fluid was slightly raised by 0.2. I thought nothing of it until she kept mentioning stillbirth. It has really frightend me. Is this normal for docs to talk about this? I'm really trying with my bloods and my last HBA1C was 6.9.

I wanted to try for a natural birth but now i'm thinking c-section maybe safer???? xxx

Hi philly

Times have changed since I had my two with diabetes, as in a lot better insulins regimes and blood glucose monitoring, even the scans give a a lot more information than when I had mine, when I had my two you were seen by two different consultants/teams, the anti-natal and the diaebetic team, yes on two different days  Now most hospitals cover all the needs of anti-natal and diabetes in one clinic in my area means that we've got to travel to the main hospital 15 miles away rather than our own out patient anti-natal clinc...

Best advise I can give, is to look after yourself, monitor you blood glucose levels any concerns you have contact your medical team... Try not to worry as this can put up your blood glucose as well as your blood pressure relax and enjoy your pregnancy as when baby gets here you won't know what hit you, they may well be a small bundle of joy, but boy do they require a lot of time

As to C-section, well you really need to discuss this with your medical team, as they are the only ones who have the relevant information.. I had both my two normal births, but for me there wasn't a medical reasons to say that C-section was a safer option...

Your querry concerning stillbirth, the HCP professional is bound to inform patient of any risk, so pending mothers are told of this risk if you are concerned have a talk with your midwife, any concerns you have let the team know, and they will do there best to put into prospective within you and your baby...

Good luck, work with your team..

Re: Anybody a type 1 who is pg????

Thanks hun,

I guess i should have faith that things will be ok if i carry on with what i'm doing. I know the doc who spoke to me just deals with high risk pregnancy so may not have much experience with diabetic mums to be.

Re: Anybody a type 1 who is pg????

Hi philly,

I have had diabetes for 13 yrs and have had two successful pregnancies, my youngest is two. At the hospital i attended the ran an ante-natal diabetic clinic in which i saw my usual consultant because he had a specialty in diabetes and pregnancy, there was also a diabetic midwife. I was immediately referred as soon as i found out i was pregnent ( i was going from 6 weeks gone). I must admit growth scans are scary with my youngest they told me he wasn't growing so had to have them every week. I also found the level of care i got was really good and my control was the best I'd ever had (hba1c of 5.5 for both pgs). I was advised to have c-sections but not because of diabetes but because of pg complications that could happen to anybody. My friend has had two natural births the last being 45 mins long!
Can't you find out if there is a clinic at a nearby hospital that deals with both ante-natal and diabetes? I think that they will be able to deal with any worries you may have about your pg and your diabetes.

Hope all goes well

Re: Anybody a type 1 who is pg????

Hi

Please try not to let them freak you out, nurses say alot of things that are worrying.
I had my daughter 3 years ago, i kept my levels stable and she was born healthy weight with no problems whatsoever. I was induced at 39 weeks and had a natural birth.

Just concentrate on keeping relaxed and healthy and keeping your levels good.
I hope everything goes well

Re: Anybody a type 1 who is pg????

Hi,
My wife got diagnosed with type 1 during her 2nd pg and he is now 14 mths and we have just found out she is pg again with our 3rd child. She is worried cause it did cause mayhem wtih her levels but the dc's and nurses were excellent. She also loved the additional scans you will have and helped her grow more attached i think. She did have have a c-section but that was due to her having an emerg one with our first baby as he was in distress and not cause of the diabetes. They did check his sugar levels as soon as he was born and were slightly low but nothing to cause any real concern and apart from that everything was normal.
Post any questions you might have and i'll ask her to check out the thread later as she does not know anyone with diabetes and i think feels quite alone sometimes.
Thanks

Re: Anybody a type 1 who is pg????

Hi

I have been type 1 for 26 years. My baby girl is one week from being 5 months old and as far as we are aware she is perfect.

I found the whole 9 months a huge stress worrying about keeping my bloods low. My 2 Hba1cs tests were 6.3% and 6.1%. I had 4 scans in the end I think. They said Faye was on the 50th percentile and she still is. At my last scan the man doing the scan said she was a big baby but the consultant disagreed. I worried for the next 22 days until she was born!! I was induced and Faye was born 10 days early and weighed 7lbs 8. The scans can be 16oz either way so try not to worry about the estimated weights you might receive.

I was told my waters were low but this didn't cause any complications. I remember seeing my baby at this scan and she ( we didn't know her sex at the time) was moving her lips like she was blowing kisses at me.The extra scans kept giving m the motivation to stay positive.

I was induced at 38.5 weeks.I went in on Monday morning to have a pessary inserted to start dilation. My contractions started pretty quickly and by 9pm the consultant decided to break my waters to get things going. Tuesday around 6pm I was 9 - 9.5cm dilated but Faye's head wasn't in the right position to come out naturally so I was taken for an emergency c section. Faye was born at 7.19pm. She stayed with me for a while but was then taken to a special unit to be given formula as she had a low blood. She was returned to me in the morning.

I wish Faye had come out the way nature intended but it wasn't meant to be and the c section was fine. The staff took care of me exceptionally well and the sliding scale they used kept my bloods at 5.7 - 5.9 the entire 2 days it was used. I wish I could do that well every day.

By the time Faye was born I was tired. They tested my blood sugar levels every hour to keep them right. I don't really remember much of the 2 days. i had an epidural so I didn't feel the contractions after they broke my waters. I think the sliding scale worked exceptionally well although before hand i worried about it a lot. The care I had was fantastic. My scar has healed fine. I can't remember it hurting or anything like that. It was just frustrating afterwards not being able to drive for 6 weeks.

Any questions you have i am happy to answer, don't hold back. I know i found support hearing other diabetic mothers' stories. Dafne online forums have some good positive feeds.

Take each day as it comes, stay positive and have confidence in yourself. Good luck.
