anyone else here take baclofen?

Hi

Just wondering if anyone else here is taking baclofen? Baclofen is an anti-spasmodic medication often used to treat MS patients and spinal injury patients. I'm on it to help control spasms. It does have raising blood sugar levels as a listed side effect.

If you are on it... are you finding it is increasing your levels?

At the moment I'm trying to stabilise myself after a long period of illness and sometimes I wonder if this drug is contributing to my sugar levels being higher. I'm on 25mg of it per day. But I take 5mg, 10mg, 10mg. It has to be taken with meals as if you take it without food it makes you real sick. At this stage I will be kept on the drug because they pulled me off it once last year and I was worse without it.

Sammy - It's not my place to tell you what to do, but sometimes we have to try things outside our preference zone, in an effort to improve our overall quality of life. I think anyone, reading the list of potential side-effects for almost any medication wouldn't want to take them, but let's not forget, side-effects are usually potential side effects, and not everyone has them.

If your spasms are as painful as you describe, it may be worrth at least trying this option. Being prescribed anything is rarely a set-in-stone decision forever, and of course sometimes things need a bit of tweaking, but it sounds like you don't fancy staying as things are too much.

Good luck with it all.

Sammy, if you are suffering from spasms they like to trial baclofen on you. I'm now on 40mg per day (10mg morning, 10mg lunch, and 20mg dinner). They had to increase my dosage as my spasms weren't controlled. I've been warned they still don't think I'm on the optimum dosage for the baclofen and amitriptyline. I'm also on a calcium channel blocker to help with spasms. I feel for you as spasms are awful to deal with. They're also extremely hard to predict and control. When I'm real bad I need to take codeine with a sedative and lie down. They pulled me off baclofen for a day of fasting to prep me for a colonoscopy. I was the first person for the day and when I got to the hospital I was in spasm and my BP was very high. The anaesthetist didn't like my BP level. But this is the consequence of taking me off baclofen for a day, it triggered a big spasm. I literally can't be without it. It's worth a try. I know there are side effects to it.... there are side effects to all the drugs I'm on and any other drug people take. I hope you can get some relief from your spasms soon. :)
