The NHS does not provide meters on prescription, though what happens some GP practices etc get given meters by the companies who in turn give you the meter, as they make money on the test strips. In some areas in an attempt to reduce costs they are switching people over to their preferred choice and will issue you a meter, (cheap on test strips) some of the meters are not liked by the users as some can't trust what the meter says or are unreliable.
I have fairly recently switched to the Bayer contour next usb meter, which Bayer kindly sent me for free, the display is clear easy to read, can log carbs and insulin add notes from a selection that's on the meter.
Its powered by a rechargeable battery, which is charged via a usb port on your computer or you can order a free mains charger.
The software is easy to use (I downloaded the full version from the Bayer web site) or you can use the software built into the meters which runs when you connect the meter to a PC.
The next choice would be for me the Bayer contour XT or one of the Abbott Medisense meters like the freestyle lite or the freestyle xceed.
