Hi All,

I had a pretty bad bankhol as spent most of it in hospital.

I had a foot infection, for which I got antibiotics from my Doctor, all seemed fine, burning pain stopped and foot was beginning to look good day 5 or so days on antibiotics... However I then thought I was having an allergic reaction to the antibiotics as my midsection started feeling hot and then a few days later swelling...

As the swelling became extreme and it was now saturday, local surgery closed so I went to A&E who kept me in and put on intravenous antibiotics (a different variety) for 2 days where I seemed to stabilize, but while in hosp they were concerned about my blood sugars levels which shot up to 14.3 (they where doing finger prick tests). On leaving Hosp, they advised me to see my doctor about that.

Just seen my doctor who said on reading Hospital notes that I Sepsis, So I had done all the right things in going to A&E when I did, or I'd of ended up going by ambulance within the next 24-36 hours. I'd not heard of Sepsis, and he explained how serious that was.

So asking on here, anyone else had any episodes of Sepsis and how did you get on?

Doctor has now run a full set on blood test as I asked if perhaps I should be given something in addition to the metformin that I'm on for a few months to bring my blood sugars down and so stop my diabetes interfering with recovering from Sepsis. I'm awaiting the results.

I have.

I was on chemotherapy at the time, which kills off the immune system as well as the cancer cells, so we are very susceptible to infection and have to take great care. We were told to take our temperatures several times a day and before bed. If it rose above 37 we had to repeat every 10 minutes. If it got to 37.5 we had an emergency number to ring. Mine rose to 37.5 so I rang and was told to get down to the hospital ASAP to the Medical Assessment Unit. This by-passes A&E. I was expected and immediately put on an antibiotic drip. I was then transferred to a ward, in a side room to avoid contact with any infections. I had half hour long infusions every 4 hours. My temperature dropped back to normal after my first infusion, and after every test in the book they could not find any source of infection. However, my neutrophil count was almost zero (the bits of the white blood cells that fight infection.) so I was kept in for 3 days until the neutrophils got back to a reasonable level.

I had no pain or discomfort whatsoever, and did not feel ill in the slightest. Had I not taken my temperature when I did I wouldn't have known, and if the infection continued I would have died. The diagnosis was neutropenia sepsis.

Hi,

Thanks for that, I was beginning to think I was the only one in the village....

I also didn't really have any pain or discomfort, although I had swelled up (ALOT) although if this ever happens to me again I think I will be asking for what exactly is showing up in my white blood count test.

And once again thanks.,

I’ve just had a very bad case and nearly died. A very traumatic divorce has caused huge stress and my blood sugar levels were wild. I developed raging cystitis which despite antibiotics rapidly spread. I had the sepsis rash, high temperature and felt like I was dying. It’s hard to explain but I felt I was losing a battle. I was given v strong antibiotics and I’m now in recovery. My utmost priority is to get my blood sugars into normal range which is a battle I’m slowly winning

Yep been there got the t shirt , had my leg amputated in 2014 got sepsis after that , it knackered my kidneys went down to1 % function wasn’t well even though I felt okish , was given emergency dialysis for about 2 weeks kidney function came back to about 28% , was like that for 10 years am now on dialysis 3 times a week sounds , bad but to be honest it could be a hell of a lot worse I’m still here breathing and getting on with life a definite plus

I had pneumonia Christmas 2018. I got sepsis and ended up in the Royal Stoke teaching hospital Resus unit then the ICU. I thought I was going to die. Spent 5 days in hospital, months recovering. Messed up pancreas. I think the sepsis damaged my pancreas. My blood sugars were great before I got sick. I can’t tolerate fats.
edited to remove Pancreas insufficiency
