Appealing DVLA ban

Hi everyone,
I have only just joined the forum. I have done several searches to see if this has already been raised, but not found an answer. Please forgive me if I am going over old ground.

My diabetes is reasonably under control. I have been on Humalog mix 25 for over 15 years without too many issues. I have had a couple of hypos requiring assistance from others, one in October 2011 and the other in December 2011. These both happened effectively on wakening in the morning. I am very aware while I am awake, but don't see how I can be when I am asleep. The second one happened the week I get out of hospital having had an operation, and I am sure that had some effect.

My driving license was due for renewal in March 2012, and I duly filled in all the forms. I got a letter a couple of days ago saying that the DVLA was banning me. I can really understand if I had been having severe hypos during the day. Personally, I don't think I would want to drive if that were the case. I am very aware of when my blood sugar is going low while I am awake.

The question, finally, is has anyone appealed? I have six months to go until the anniversary of my first hypo. Is the appeals procedure likely to take longer than that?

Thanks for reading this.

Denis

Most appeals I've seen have been based on the old regulations, and not the new one's brought in last year! There's no telling how long an appeal will take only that normally it takes several months to sort out at least!

Not sure what you mean 'effectively upon waking' As I should imagine that if you tucked up in bed when you were treated then this would still be classed as 'night-time' whether it was 5am or 10am or 2pm in the afternoon if you've been working a night shift!

All you can do, is put in your appeal and see how it goes...

Denis,

There's no harm in appealing if you think you have a case, it might be worth your while contacting Diabetes UK who may be able to offer you some advice on this matter.
