Anonymous Question Are fruit juices ok?

Fruit juices are not a good idea other than in small quantities as they are very rapidly absorbed causing spikes. They may also have a lot of fructose and not always much fibre

Yep, my DSN and dietitian said the same thing: it's better to eat the whole fruit instead.

Anonymous, you would be better off spooning table sugar into a glass of water and drinking that. I am not kidding.

On the NHS course the dietician said that you should drink no more than you would be able to squeeze from a portion of fruit and then you are wasting all the useful matter. Something we agreed on lol

I can tolerate lucozade better than fruit juice! By that I mean when I'm low if I was to have fruit juice I would get a really high level after, whereas with lucozade it's much more controlled.

Fruit juice causes my bs to shoot up so I avoid as much as possible. I also can't eat oranges, apples or bananas.

Ditto, ditto and ....ditto

So having read through this tread - today I jumped form 12.2 to 20.2after dring a glass of orange juice - are you saying eating fruit is also bad for a diabetic?

Not anywhere near as bad as drinking the fruit juice. Berries are best.

IMHO the main issue is that you will casually drink a lot more in juice than you'd eat in the form of fruit - e.g. you need 4 oranges for one cup of juice, and you probably wouldn't eat 4 oranges with your breakfast.

Strawberries ? rasberries ? blue berries ?

I can eat all those in moderation with no bad spike. I can't eat apples, oranges or bananas any more, They have a truly spectacularly bad effect on my BG. The only way you will find out what spikes you and what doesn't is to eat some then test 2 hours later. Eat to your meter, there's really no other way and what suits me may not suit you. It's all experimentation.

Oh and juice is dreadful, nothing good about it.
Good Luck

What about my favorite drink - diel coke ?

That is ok for blood sugars but who knows what else all of those chemicals do to you.
