I have been testing my BG and keeping a food diary for a week now and my BG levels although quite high in the mornings before breakfast have been 6.5 to 7.6 then most has days dropped down into the 5 range two hours after eating. Much the same at evening meal in the 5 range again except the before BG level has been lower than the first morning one.
I found today that I could eat two slices of Bergen toast..only had one slice of that or rye bread other days... I had two slices of thin ham and some mushrooms on the toast the level before 6.5 after 2/12 hours 4.5 Had lunch out roast pork three roast potatoes cauliflower brocolli and carrots tested when I got home after 21/2 hours and BG 5.7. This coming week I will try other foods and see how that goes.
I really do need to put on about 4lb in weight I feel best at about 9 stone now 8st 10 lb so thought I would try a whey protein shake perhaps once a day as that is low in fat and hardly any sugar

Dear Maybird,
Your levels are a little high especially the 7.6 mmol/L first early morning reading but this isn't so bad as from your readings after having eaten breakfast it has subsequently fallen back to what are good levels. It's common for the first early morning reading to be initially high and something to look out for incase it should at some later stage show a trend developing.

You also seem to have chosen a wide and varied diet what with the meat (proteins) vegs and the rest. But don't miss out on calcium dairy produce (milk/low fat yogurt) as this goes a long way in helping strengthening bones particularly important to any woman who migh be approaching their middle age.

Breakfast is most important, so never miss it, as it refurbishes the body with it's first intake of energy for the comming day, and select breakfast from a wide and varied variety of foods. The occasional fry up, particularly as the winter season is approaching is a good thing as this will release energy slowly into the bloodstream. It isn't everyones choice I know, but an oat based cerial or porriage with a few dried fruits is also a good start to the day as being a low GL food item it can sustain the indivual for several hours, often until lunch time. Another occasional good breakfast choice is kippers (ideally grilled so as to minimise the fat)

A small glass of unsweetened fruit juice (orange) is also a good source of vitamin C and breakfast is a good time to take this.

After a few weeks testing your B/G you should be able to almost predict what the inevitable B/G reading will be both before and after 2 hours of eatin/drinking a meal, so that you will then be able to ease back with all the B/G tests and only test when you feel it necessciary or if you are feeling stressed or suffering from illness.

Well done in what you've acheived so far - Lazybones

Thank you for your reply
Yes I do have dairy foods milk yogurt and cheese
Is there anything I can do to lower my first morning levels I don't normally eat anything after my evening meal except maybe a few nuts early evening so should I be having some kind of snack during the evening would that help

Hi! If your levels are mostly in the 7's fasted that would suggest Type 2 diabetes as opposed to pre-diabetes as the diagnostic criteria for type 2 is 2 fasted readings above 7mmol (1 if symptomatic) although that is through a veinous sample sent to the lab and home monitoring does have a degree of error.

I had two 12 hour fasting blood tests two weeks apart last month and the levels were first one 6.9 and second one 6.8 so my doctor said I was very borderline but not type 2 yet
