Here we go again... but an excellent summary even tho one wonders re the affiliation of the writer...

The key phrase there for me is "if prescribed properly and to suitable patients"

So far as I am aware the only group of patients where the benefits have been shown to outweigh the risks are middle-aged men (not women) who have already had a heart attack*... hardly a justification for the blanket prescribing of these drugs to a huge proportion of the population based on an arbitrary LDL number that is controversial at best.

*Even in these limited cases it may have nothing to do with the statins ability to "lower cholesterol levels" but rather may be an anti-inflammatory effect; which might equally be achieved by dietary changes and/or the use of a daily aspirin.

I was 33, not overweight, normal BMI, Chol, I excercise frequently etc. I've not had a heart attack and the last time I checked I was very much a woman :lol: Besides it tends to be strokes in my family, so perhaps a daily aspirin is the way to go, or a red wine? :P

I was happily seeing my DN who never even mentioned Statins when I got a call from the GP to discuss some medication. I met the GP and refused to take the 'preventative measure' and told them we can talk when I'm 40.

Later on my DN told me the GP perhaps hadn't realised the criteria to offer Statins to. :?:
