Are we registered disabled?

Hi Everyone!

I am currently on another topic talking about weight gain and the fact I really need to join a gym.

When I diagnosed a couple of years ago I was told we are considered disabled... now dont get me wrong.. i dont consider myself disabled at all but do consider my condition to need particular needs. Insuling makes you put weight on so are we entitled to discounted gym memberships.

I ask as the gym I want to join has a clause stating there is a discount for registered disabled people... so this is why I ask.

A gym membership here monthly is £38!!!! A disgusting amount of money esp in this current climate.. I know a lot of us are feeling the pinch! However is about £29 at the consessionary rate.

Anyone know?

You know I was just thinkin about that the other day - there's a really good gym just near me and I'd love to join but it's about £40 a month plus a joining fee - now I wouldn't normally even consider it purely on cost grounds, but a few years ago a friend (who shall remain nameless) got FREE access to her local gym - just because she was overweight?? and not even to the extend to which I am ... so I would be very interested if anyone's had any success on that front?!

You are considered disabled if you have diabetes but I'm not sure how you go about making it official!!
 
Yeh exactly... at the end of the day exercise brings your sugars down... if you are type 1 or 2 so it should be seen as medication in that sense. I need less insulin if I have been running or anything, so surely its saving them money in the long term that I dont get any complications

I dont know how hard im going to find it to argue this one out with some pumped up gym manager who needs to pay his Porsche off ! haha

I may just ring them and ask.. but I see it as if my doctor says I am considered disabled... I should get the benefits :lol:

I may email my nurse she will know!

Our local authority gym has a scheme for people who need it on health grounds and we get a concessionary fee. £20 per month.
I would hate to be seen as disabled. I don't even like being called "ill"
 
I completely agree with I dont want to be seen as disabled and I consider Diabetes a condition and not an illness. But hey... what has my diabetes done for me? Nowis the time it can pay its rent for inhabiting my body and get me a discount at the gym!!! :lol:

I have emailed my nurse and she is really good so hopefully she will find out!

Not sure about registration as such but our condition is covered by Disability Discrimination legislation (Dis Discrimination Act 1995) as far as I am aware.

IF you read it, certainly open to interpretation like all law but my employer for example has a responsibility to make 'reasonable adjustments' for my condition (when I finally get back to work - cant believe am looking forward to is as it will be barometer that all has returned to normal)..

Perhaps wield this?

Right my nurse has just got back to me and said that basically we arent registered disabled only as stated above, covered my the disability law. So I'm gonna try anyway to see if I can get a discount!

Yes as stated we are not considered disabled, that is unless you have lost a limb to diabetes, but people with diabetes are covered under the Disability at work act. basically you can not be discriminated against, in the work place. Provision has to be made depending on the size of your employer regarding regular rest brakes etc.
 
@Bonerp. My understanding is that insulin is essentially a growth hormone. As such, there are very few insulins out there that do not have the effect of increasing weight. Such is the irony of our condition. We are constantly bombarded with messages to lose weight, and then they put us on drugs that have the exact opposite effect... :roll:
