At a loss with diet...

Hi all! New member here and newly diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

I'm a 26 year old female who suffers from M.E. and possibly a few other things which are currently being investigated.

So after receiving the news that I was pre-diabetic about 3 weeks ago, I started myself on the Paleo diet. My consultant did recommend Atkins but my digestive system doesn't approve of too many eggs or dairy so it would be incredibly restrictive, Paleo seemed to fit in better with how I was already eating.

Before being diagnosed, I was eating: No white bread, pasta or rice. Maybe a ready meal once a week and a takeaway once a week with maybe a pastry once a week too. I'm not overweight, if anything I'm probably under. However, due to my M.E. getting worse my activity levels have severely dropped in the last year or so.

The reason I'm posting here is because the Paleo diet has made me incredibly ill. I've been bedbound at least once (often twice) a day every day for the last 2 weeks, which isn't normal for me. I'm bedbound maybe a few times a month. But this has made me feel really, really unwell. So I'm at a loss what to do. I've added a small amount of regular potato back into my diet but it doesn't seem to be enough to make me feel back to my "normal" level of illness.

My doctors approach was "you'll feel terrible for a few weeks but it will pass" but being so ill im bedbound really isn't acceptable for me, I'm trying to complete a university degree, having lots of hospital appointments to attend and of course it's completely awful having to feel that unwell.

So I'm wondering what I do with my diet now. Is it enough to just cut out the bad things I was having a few times a week but to eat my wholemeal bread, pasta and rice again in the same quantities?

From my 2 hour glucose tolerance test, my fasting glucose was 4.7 mmol/L and after 2 hours it was 9.8 mmol/L

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Feeling ill doesn't really describe exactly what is happening - can you elaborate further?

If your carb intake is low enough, it may be the same thing as "Atkins flu" or "low carb flu". I would try drinking bouillon as per Dr Stephen Phinney's recommendation as you can be losing too many electrolytes.

I'm getting really awful muscle pain, dizziness, nausea, extreme fatigue, trouble concentrating, feeling like I'm going to collapse. I mean, these are all symptoms I experience just with the M.E. but ive had them every single day and much more pronounced than usual since starting.

I've been drinking coconut water to try and keep my electrolyte stuff up.

My doctor didnt really give me any useful advice so I'm incredibly new to all this without really knowing what I'm doing!
