Went to a local pub / eatery Friday for a meal. I visit once / twice a week for a glass of red or two.
Just about everything on the menu is carb-laden (cooked in or accompanied by batter, breadcrumbs, french fries, rice, mash etc. etc.)
So I asked for a knuckle of lamb on a bed of green veg (instead of a bed of garlic mash) - with gravy / mint sauce - delicious.
Strawberries and double cream for desert.
There is hope!

Food choices are just like that here... And occasionally you hit the jackpot. You should of got a lottery ticket too. :)

Mmm, strawberries and cream! I didn't think I liked cream until I tried it recently, it was delicious! Glad you found something you liked.

I had to ask specifically for something suitable.
Every restaurant has the ingredients to provide a low carb meal, but they don't.

How about this for an idea.......
A menu could provide a list of ingredients from which we ask the chefs to prepare combinations of our choosing?

The closest we have to a "greasy caff" in town includes a "Lo Carb" breakfast.
Considering it is most popular when the clubs empty in the early hours of the morning, I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the menu.
I have not tried it ... partially because it is not veggie.

A result, @Jo_the_boat. I've found that most restaurants are willing to alter dishes at request, e.g. no bun, no chips but extra veg/salad for burgers, if you can find one that is easily changed. Good for that caff, @helensaramay - more greasy spoons should do that; after all, they only have to serve up The Full Monty without the carb stuff and they can boast that they have a healthy option!

If you don't ask, you won't get! When you ask the kitchen know that there is a demand for an alternative and may start to offer it on the main menu, particularly if you go back fairly regularly and spread the word that the establishment is prepared to be flexible.

I dread going out for food and trying to keep it low carb. I have to give such specific instructions when I order as I’m allergic to meat, poultry and dairy - I often end up havimg just a salad with half the ingredients knocked out and maybe a chunk of fish or prawns if I’m lucky... Veggie and vegan meals tend to be so carby, especially if they are using fake meat products. Pastry and stuff seems to feature very highly!

Your meal sounds epic though :)

My local cafe does a low carb breakfast sausage egg bacon (tomato) mushrooms well lowish anyway if you don't have the toast , fried bread or hash browns. :)

Of course I am not a vegetarion or vegan.

I went out for a meal on Saturday, impromptu visit, the one that has the unlimited salad cart so already onto a winner, stayed away from the potato salad and pasta options, I then ordered a steak with blue cheese and cream sauce, was a good girl and asked for steamed veg in place of the chips and even had a glass of wine. BG readings before meal were 5.2, 2 hrs. after 5.5 and out of curiosity in case the 5.5 was a blip 3 hrs. after they were 5.8. Tested first thing Sunday morning 5.7 :)

I usually have eggs, mushrooms, maybe a vegan sausage (Linda McCartney are ok) and half an avocado if I’m having breakfast out. I managed that fine at a veggie place when I was away a couple of weeks ago, some are less accommodating!

Thing is carbs are cheap, some places don't like giving veg instead of chips as chips are cheap!!!

The rare times we go out to eat, I find ordering a meat appetizer along with a salad usually does the trick. If out for breakfast, I usually just order a three egg omelette (there's usually 2-3 acceptable choices).

I indulged on a pizza last Friday. Base is full of carbs. Trick is to avoid the sparse ones with hardly any topping like a Margherita. Instead, lashings of salami, cheese and fats. The high fat content slows down digestion and I don't get a big spike. I do stay a bit higher for longer but gee just once in a while for a treat.

BG at the start was 5.4 and up to 7.7 after 1 hour but only dropped to 6.8 after 2 hours. Back under 6 by five hours. Not ideal but I think better than a jump to 12 for 1 hour.

Have fun,
Glenn
