At what high mmol should you consider hospital? Mines 27.9

I've currentl got a virus and my BG 5 mins ago was 27.9. Should I go to hospital or ride it out?

Are you getting any other symptoms eg sickness? Can you test for ketones? I would ere on the side of caution and get checked out if you can.

When my daughter had food poisoning a few weeks ago, her levels were like that the first 2 days, i rang her DSN who gave me instructions over the phone to test every 2 hours and inject novorapid every 2 hours on the sliding scale that she gave me. She then rang 3-4 times a day to see how she was and that was it, i was a bit :shock:
But maybe i just worry about her too much

I comitted the ultimate no-no-I drank some Lucozade as I wasn't eating due to lack of appetite

I've just called NHS24 and was berated by a DSN telling me what type 2's should be eating I told her that I know all this but I thought a little would be ok cos of not eating, I was wrong :roll: She said no need for A&E but the Doc is going to phone me in an hour

Oh no, that was not very understanding of her

I don't know if drinking lots of water would help at all?

Whenever I've read other posts about high levels the advice has been drink water and take a long slow walk as exercise often brings levels down-but don't go yet wait for that call from the Doc and maybe they'll come up with a new idea we can all learn from!

Foxybaby, that nurse was stating the obvious, as if you didnt know all that already.
Dont worry, I think we all have made mistakes like these before.
It is right advice from Spearmint and Gappy, drink lots of water, but maybe water is not comforting, you could drink tea. Can you manage to make a quick low carb soup (I am not suggesting you become a low carber if you are not one already) as this would not spike your bg any further, you could liquidise it and make it into a cup a soup style. It would be comforting and nourishing, what do you think?

PS I am not sure about exercise, I think we shouldnt exercise if our bg levels are over 13?

Thanks people, all your advice is much appreciated.

I can't believe I thought I'd be ok with a bottle of Lucozade :roll: Although I'm dead thirsty and dying to go drink the other bottle :shock: , but I'm making do with water. I was going to walk up and down the stairs a few times but the virus (think it was flu) has zapped my energy.

Low carb is the best, but bread is the devil and keeps tempting me :evil: I think I have some Bovril in the cupboard and lots of NAS diluting juice.

To say its so high, I'm not feeling too bad, unless its the same feeling as the virus so I just can't tell the difference. I just felt so tired and floppy, so I checked, just in case, then did my usual drama ***** act and dramatically flung myself into the bedroom to my husband and told him I was going into a coma

The nurse also asked me why I was checking seeing as I'm type II and not Insulin dependant-Have I missed something there? Aren't we all supposed to check it now and again, even if we think its all ok?

Doc just called me-apparently the Flu had its part to play in this too as that gives you a high BG, weird. Its down to 25.5mmol, he said drink lots of water and check every 2 hours to monitor it going down and to call back if it starts going back up.

Foxybaby, plenty of water, NAS, tea and if possible make a chicken and veg soup, very good for flu, bugs and so forth. Add a dash of cream, blend it, its comfort food, that is what you need.
Bread is not the devil, have you tried to bake any of the lowcarb breads? There is a one minute microwave bread even, it is filling, tastes like a wholemeal bread.

Hi, My name is Michele,
i was diagnosed 3years ago with type 2, before i went on to insulin last xmas my stats were always in the high 20s, It might be a good idea to book an appointment with your doctor or diabetic nurse and see if you can get them to sort out your meds, are you loosing weight, i lost tons of weight when my bs was that high all of the time, i don't kno what the hospital can do for you, i think it's usually the diabetic lead at your GP who usually deals with your meds, or the nurse at the diabetic clinic.
You certainly need to see your doctor if you bs is coming in at that level.

I think i came in at the end of this thread and missed the middle bit, yes lucasade and being ill both spike your bs, if it stays high sill a good idea to see the doc.

WhitbyJet-There's microwave bread? Really? I'll have to look for it. I love cooking, but baking most definately not my forte :lol: But if there is some simple low carb bread recipes around I may have a go. TBH, bread is my demon and I'm probably best staying away from it altogether.

Thanks Michele. I'm on Metformin, I take it for PCOS too as I'm trying to have a baby and it helps with that too. I was threatened with Insulin by a DSN a long time ago, so that made me try and keep on the straight and narrow with the low carbs.

I'm down to 19.1, so still high but I reckon I should be back to normal by tomorrow and I can stop freaking out :?

I wonder about the advice to drink lots of water and not exercise over 13'ish mmol BS? I'm not aware of any evidence that water will help bring down BS levels but it may hlep in other ways such as dehydration. Also I've never heard of any advice/evidence that there is any specific higher BS limit that should preclude exercise; it's one of the helpful ways to bring BS down.

I had heard the high = no exercise thing too, but not from a professional, only on the grapevine, so I don't know what the pros advice would be.

Just guessing here now: maybe if the BS is too high - I would say over 17 rather than 13 - it is possible that the effort of exercise might produce an adrenaline surge which could put it up further. That is only a guess though, so don't anyone take it as fact.

For me, I prefer not to exercise at over 17, because I feel so B**y awful. But it's much easier for me because, being type 1, I can have some insulin to sort it out while I rest. If I were to refrain from exercise every time I went over 13 I'd not get much done. :shock: And yes, it really does bring it down at that level and is quite safe, at least, it does for me.
