Type of diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone,
I have been diagnosed with type 2 on the 1st September.
My BG level was 15 . My cholesterol is 5.2 and my blood pressure is 85/130.
My A**1ac was 11 something.
I have been issued with metformin at 2 by 500mg daily.
I have been on a low carb diet since the 19th september as i am ( was ) 155kg.
I am eating well and had my first visit with the nurse today which was very good.
She explained a lot and answered all of my questions.
She teste the circulation in my feet with a tuning fork and an ultrasound device!!
One thing she said was that i was not eating enough carbs as my urine was full of Ketones, she said my kidneys were fine and there was no sugar in my urine.
My question ( eventually ) is : If my urine is full of ketones surely this is a goos thing as it shows my body is in ketosis?
Any advice would be fantastic.
Many thanks
Clint

Hi Clint, and welcome.

There is a distinct difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis, both of which result in ketones showing in a urine test.

Ketosis is a state when your body is burning fat for energy, in the absence of dietary carbohydrate, which results in ketones being excreted in your urine. This state is perfectly natural, and usually associated with low(ish) blood glucose readings. You'll feel fine when you're in ketosis - no nausea or tiredness, and generally feeling well. Ketosis generally occurs when you have a daily carbohydrate intake of 50g or less - no need to worry about it. Not all HCPs understand this.

Ketoacidosis, on the other hand, is a VERY serious condition which can lead to coma and death. You will certainly show ketones in your urine, but in adults it is usually associated with high blood glucose readings, feeling ill, nausea, vomiting etc. If you have these symptoms in association with ketones in your urine, get to A&E immediately. Don't wait to ask questions - rather waste their time than DIE! It's that serious.

I suggest that you read around on both topics so that you feel confident in your own judgement. But, if you're on a low-carb diet, some ketones in your urine are perfectly natural, and as long as you're feeling okay you have no need to worry. If you don't want to show ketones, up your carb intake to about 70g per day.

If you ever get to the point where you are showing ketones and don't feel okay, get help immediately.

And don't worry unnecessarily.

Many thanks Viv.
My BG readings are ok 5 to 5.7 before eating and 6 to 6.9 2 hours after eating so i thought everything was ok but doubt creeps in when someone says otherwise.
I have read Dr eades books and that is the regime i am following.

Hi Clint and welcome to the forum I see Viv has answered your question. Since you are newly diagnosed I think you will find the basic information that we give to new members helpful. Carry on asking questions as that is the best way to learn about diabetes control. There is nearly always someone here to help.

Hi Daisy1,
I really appreciate the advice and support.
My Doctor and the nurse were really supportive and pretty well informed so thats a bonus.

Many thanks

Clint
