Hello. I'm a newbie. I've just been diagnosed as diabetic on a long term blood test reading, but I'm blessed in that so far I have no symptoms whatsoever. I'm in the process of planning an eating regime that will help me lose up to a third of my body weight while reducing all the bad food intake.

I know that there are many places where I can find GI, GL, protein, fat and carb listings, but I'm not good at remembering what's what by rote. I need to find a food-specific and even brand-specific listing. What I'm thinking of is that I would type in the brand and food type and the site would tell me the readings.

Is there any such thing, please? I can't find anything by Google searching.

Hi Kevin, I don't know of anywhere that hosts brand specific items, at least not as a huge index. Google will give you carbohydrates in most of the raw foods you should be eating as a diabetic.

Other than that you may have to search individual manufacturers websites for data.

Id be interested to know about your intended regime ?

Cheers

I use sainsbury's website and I've copied all the relevant data for food I regularly eat to a spreadsheet I keep on my phone. I just save under a new filename each day, and tot up each food by weight for fresh/ingredient items and I have a list for the repeat purchased foods. Every now and then i have to add a new item, but its been a while now since I did. It helps me anyway.

This is also helpful for guessing stuff when you don't have a weight:

As I'm symptomless and only just over the HbA1c levels of 48 mmol/mol, I've started to tackle it by cutting right back on carbs (particularly sugar), fat and salt. I need to lose about a third of my body weight anyway. I'm going to reduce my calories intake until I can stand going for days at a time on net negative calories, to bring the weight down. I don't intend to include much exercise until I've reached a weight that no longer tends to incapacitate me. If I start an exercise programme now, I'll soon drop out of sheer boredom. Even if I managed to stick with it, it would just start turning my bulk into muscle that would revert to fat as soon as I stopped. I topped the scales at 18st 2 lbs a week ago and was down to 17st 12lbs today. The lowest weight I've been as an adult was 10st 10 lbs, but that was after dieting in my early 30s. I'm twice that age now. Having discussed it with my GP, I'm not averse to bouts of crash dieting if I can stand the discomfort of the hunger pains!

Hey Kevin, well done on your current weight loss, 4lbs in a week is excellent progress, cutting the carbs should most definitely spearhead your assault on dropping weight. I myself have lost a total of 48lbs in just over 3 months with the LCHF and exercise, not to mention non diabetic monthly averages as per meter, some say it's come off too fast but it has plateaued now.

Cutting the carbs and fat may mean a drop in energy especially seeing as you're also going to be eating net negative calories, so don't be afraid to top up with a little good fat should you need. I'm sure you know as you seem well versed in your game plan that recent studies have shown fat is not the monster we once thought it was, in fact fear of fat is pretty much what sparked a world wide epidemic of obesity inside of a generation, as most turned to carbohydrate as a replacement, or thereabouts.

Anyways I would be very interested to watch your progress moving forward, so please feel free to come back and keep us updated.

All the best
Daks
