I got the result of my yearly retinopathy check this morning and I've now got a small amount of background retinopathy. Funny thing is, I had a sight test yesterday at Specsavers and had the backs of my eyes photographed and was told all was fine! I feel quite let down but I suppose that as long as I keep up my yearly appointments if I end up needing treatment I'll get it ASAP.
Dunno how I feel, pretty gobsmacked really as apart from blood sugar readings I've never had ANY symptoms!

Hi outdoorgirl,

On this subject I could talk all day about, as I have had problems in the past with diabetic retinopathy, but thankfully it has been settled for some time now.

All I will say to you is make sure you keep tight control of your diabetes, keep your blood pressure below normal, likewise with your cholesterol, and make sure that you eat a well balanced nutritional diet with ample amounts of fruit and vegetables. Background Retinopathy can in some case remain just that, provided you take precautions now to stop this condition developing. Keep all appointments with gp and your eye clinic, and should you have any concerns ask your consultant at your next eye screening appointment.

Best wishes

Nigel

Hi outdoorgirl,

If it makes you feel any better, I got the same diagnosis last month, having been fine for 4 or so years :( I get re-tested in 6 months time. Am now on Metformin and on a better diet, so fingers crossed!

Like you, I also get tested at specsavers - 1 normal eye test and also contact lens check! so my eyes sure get some attention!
