Bacteria in the gut can help protect against insulin-dependent type I diabetes, scientists believe.
The bugs appeared to stop the rogue immune response that triggers the disease, tests on mice  showed. Diabetic mice were genetically engineered so that their immune systems lacked a key protein that allows them to kill off the bacteria.
When raised in a germ-free environment, 80 per cent of them developed type I diabetes – but when given a cocktail of bacteria normally found in the mammalian gut only a third did so, US scientists found.
