Bad hypo, vomiting and loss of appetite

Hello All
This is my first post. I've been type 1 since 2004 and generally have had good control. But recently things have got worse and last Friday something quite horrible happened and I wanted to know if anyone had experienced something similar or could suggest what might be going on.

I went out for a few drinks with some friends (nothing heavy and I ate before I went!) but as we sat down later in the evening I started feeling peculiar. Not really my typical hypo symptoms, but rather nausea and tiredness. Apparently I then went white as a sheet (including my lips :? ). My vision started to swim before my eyes and I thought I was going to pass out. My friend ordered me a coke which just brought me back from the brink. But I then felt incredibly sick and had to rush to the toilet to vomit profusely. When I came back I had some bread then jumped in a taxi to go home.

This I guess looks like a bad hypo but the next bit is a more confusing. When I got home I was 3.1 so had some sweets, waited 10 mins then retested. 3.0. So I had some more, waited and retested. 3.1. This happened about 3 more times, so an hour later I was still below 4. So I took a whole bottle of lucozade and this just got me up to 4.7. I had something to eat then collapsed into bed.

The next day I felt really sick and weak. I had almost no appetite. I did manage to eat bits of toast and cereal. This has continued now for the last couple of days. My levels are generally pretty volatile - high and low in an unpredictable way. And I'm not really sure why or whats going on.

Sorry for the length of this but I felt the need to get it all down! Can anyone shed some light on this - in particular the difficulty getting levels up (which I have never had before) or the loss of appetite?

Thanks and very best wishes to you all.

Hi Tom
That sounds scary, but a little familiar to me. What insulin/s are you on?

Hi Tom, are you feeling better now? Nausea and vomitting is a symptom I unfortunately recognise, usually linked to majorly low numbers (below 2). But as already said, you could have a bug which would cause your BG to rise and fall randomly and also, if you are throwing up, your body can't absorb any of the carbs you are taking to correct your hypo - daft question, but did you over dose in error perhaps? We've all done it! Do you count carbs?

Thanks, I am feeling a bit better. I take Levemir twice daily and Novorapids at mealtimes. One of the things I considered was a bug because my daughter has been a bit unwell so I thought I may have caught something. I definitely didn't overdose as it happened way after my injection, but I guess i might have walked around too much, which on top of the booze, could have caused a bad hypo. I don't count carbs but I do 'look at it' and adjust a bit up or down.

Tom,
If you are being sick like that and still having problems getting your numbers to stay up even with reduced insulin, get yourself to hospital NOW.
it could be just a bug or you could posibly have something more serious like a lack of cortisol in your body.(Addison's disease)

My numbers have normalised now, but I still don't properly understand why it was so difficult to get them up on Friday night.
I had a diabetic check-up a month ago and my numbers were generally ok, no signs of deficiency. But I guess it's a possibility

Tom,

If in doubt, get it checked out!

There may be a simple explanation as you have said yourself, perhaps you mistakenly give yourself to much insulin, mis-counted the carbs in your meal, or more booze than you remember. I am not sure about vomiting, but tiredness is a classic sign of a oncoming hypo in myself. I often feel tired and start yawning whilst going low, don't know why but I always check my blood glucose for reassurance when this happens. I just put it down to another crazy warning sign that comes with hypoglycemia.

Some time back there was a discussion on here about people having given themselves a insulin injection twice. It is surprising how many people have done this, and the consequences afterwards is fighting to normalise bg's, especially when you don't realise that you have given a double dose, and are at a lose to explain the situation. I know that you seem to be quite young, but I was talking with a elderly lady last year, and she had a horrendous time remember when she had injected herself. She would often forget to take her insulin but remember 1-2 hours later, or she would occasionally give the same dose twice. I felt really sorry for her predicament, and equally sorry for her husband too, whom she said dealt with the consequences of her forgetfulness.

Pleased you are OK now!
