Bad Mood Swings!

I have type 1, and I get extremely moody for no reason.

One minute I am fine, the next I just don't want to talk to anyone, and I will snap at anyone for no reason, even if they just talk to me normally.

I can feel my moodiness, I can feel that I don't want to talk and I just feel so "Arghhh"

I don't know if this is even related to my diabetes but I don't want to be like this anymore, does anybody know anything on this issue?

Thanks, John.

Hi John , have you tested when you feel like this ? May be a sign for you of high or low blood sugars.

Just tested myself and I am 7.7, which isn't too bad since I have had a couple of cans of beer. My levels are usually always within 4-7 and I still all of a sudden feel moody, even in work I just go quiet and don't want to talk to anyone, which is hard because my job is all about teamwork, but even if I tell myself to stop being silly and just be happy and talk to people, it just won't happen, as if there is something physically stopping me from being happy!!

John.

From your previous posts I note that you use Protein Shakes ? Do you know what the ingredients are ?

I haven't yet, it's been getting to me for a while but tonight I have just clicked and snapped for the final time and want to sort it out!

Any ideas what the Doc might say?

@ Cugila,

I haven't had any protein shakes for a good few weeks now and still experiencing moods. I am ok now and feel alright, but in an hour or so it is very possible I dont even want to talk and feel very moody!

Just to answer your question anyway in the protein shakes, its protein, very few carbs like 4.6 or something, and a whole range of vitamins.

Hi John.

Reason I asked is that there is quite a connection with Protein Shakes and Mood Swings....trawl the net and you will see for yourself. It isn't the carbs I am worried about, it is the other stuff that's in it. I have no idea how long the effect remains when you stop them or the effect they may have on a diabetic's body ?

As Sue says you should see your Dr if this persists.

Hi John

What insulin are you on? when I was on Lantus I felt not so much moody but irratable, the slightest thing would irrate me yet other times nothing would bother me.

Since changing to Levimir the irratibility has gone down quite a bit.

Maybe a chat with your Doctor, you may just find its the insulin not agreeing with you.

You are certainly not on your own and at least you recognise the signs so can make an effort to change it.

I am on Levemir and Novorapid, I have only been on this insulin since I was diagnosed about 4 months ago, I am getting really good BG levels from this insulin so would it be wise to change?

I have an appointment on Monday to see my Diabetes Nurse anyway so I will definately bring it up.

That is exactly how I feel, irritable, I was watching TV earlier and anything my girlfriend said to me I would either ignore her or snap at her, it's seriously taking it's toll on my life!

John

Definatley mention it your DB nurse and do not be fobbed off, if the only thing in your life to have changed is your diabetes and you were OK before, then you have to look at what you have changed, daft things like cutting back on coffee etc. can make a big change to how you feel but if you have not drastically changed anything you need to look at other things.

You say your BG levels are good so that should not affect you, I know when I am high my mood changes and I know when I am low my mood changes. But I recognise those as being high or low. But the Iratibility is something totally different.

Its hard to explain it, pretty much like when someone is deliberatley winding you up and you can feel yourself getting less tolerant. The Lantus definatley had that affect on me and the levimir has not been as bad, but I was telling my wife about your post and she says I have been really irratable for the last week since starting on the leveimir  The other thing it does, is make me itch, I want to keep scratching my arms and my face, usually within an hour of taking it, then it gradually wears off.

If you look at the forum you will see a lot of people don't get on with certain types of insulin, until I started reading the forum I had no idea that Lantus could cause so many of the symptoms I was living with. Which is why I recently changed to Levimir. I have an appointment with specialist in November and I am going to see about changing to something else.

As you are new to the diabetes game, it could well be you are just having to adjust to the whole way of life and deal with the changes your body makes. But if you feel how I think you are saying you feel, its more than that. OK so you might need to change insulin but its better to go through the hassle of changing insulin than to risk your relationship etc.

Good luck.
