This is totally off topic but is really bugging me wonder if anyone else has had something similar
We recently had a letter from our bank saying they were updating their security and needed my husband to give proof of address and proof of identity then listed what would be acceptable. Proof of identity would be photo proof so a passport or driving licence neither of which my husband has he has never had a passport and he had to give up driving earlier this year because of his eyesight no longer being good enough to drive so he had to send his licence back. Proof of address can be a utility bill or other bill dated in the last four months .Problem is we do not get utility bills as we pay them all by direct debit so usually only get a summary once a year A council tax bill is acceptable but we only get that once a year around April time. Same with his retirement pension he only get a yearly notification in April. If he was able to provide any of these he would then have to get someone professional like a Barrister, Doctor ,Government Official, MP.. there is a list of those acceptable to put in writing that they certify he is who he says he is none of who he knows except his doctor and our surgery charges £10 for any letter. We have already been into the bank and thought it was sorted they took his government retirement pension letter as proof of identity and the council tax bill as proof of address although they are older than four months he said they may ask for updated ones next year so we thought that was it. But no today he has got another letter saying they could not accept what he gave them and now want the same things they have already asked for and told he has not got. What we can't understand is we have had a joint account at the same bank for 30 years and they say the security for me is fine but they have not got any details for him yet wages when he was working and his retirement pensions since have been paid into it every month since we have had the account yet they say they have no details for him on their records ...he is 85 and this is really stressful as we do not know what to do now... sorry for such a long post

Personally, I would tell them to go and take a running jump, but I dare say that will be water off a duck's back to them. Somewhere, there will be details of your bank's complaints procedure. I'd start by writing to them, explaining the background, as you have in your post here, and asking them to stop hassling your husband.

Point out to them that this is all absolutely ridiculous, that you have had a joint account with them for years and that there is no way that either of you should be expected to prove who you are after all this time.

It's getting ridiculous. Both my parents have the same problem. Never had passports. Don't drive. And these days many utility bills are online.

We pointed out to the chap at the bank that there must be loads of people especially older ones who do not have this kind of photo proof but he just said he knew there would be but unfortunately that's the proof of identity things need now. So what are people supposed to do get a passport they will probably never use to go abroad just to satisfy a bank..ridiculous
