- soaps on telly and people talking about the characters as if they were real.
We diabetics revere Banting and Best as the discoverers of insulin. Banting certainly got a Nobel prize in1923, but shared with Mcleod, the head of the research lab. Best was NOT honoured. He was"Merely" a lab tech and so left out.
The head of the lab has often been honoured, even if they didn't take much part in the work. another was Henri Bequerel, on the work of the Curies
Fleming discovered penicillin, but decided it wasn't any use other than a lab assay tool. It took Florey and Chain, a couple of decades later and working in the constrictions of wartime, to find a use for the stuff and to sole the problem of how to get enough of it. their first patient died, because they ran out.
I was told, on a visit to Churchill hospital Oxford, that as the supply of penicillin was running low, it was being recovered from the urine of the patient. Even to the extent of mopping up some spilled onto the floor.
I ought to write a book about the unhonoured heroes.
To be fair to him, Fleming said he didn't deserve any honour. It was pushed for by the "head of the lab".( can't remember his name) After all it was the result of some pretty bad biosecurity.
