I have been vaguely aware of the Banting approach to eating and of the work of Tim Noakes. Having done a bit more reading and research I thought the following website might be useful for people new to LCHF or newly diagnosed diabetics http://realmealrevolution.com/the-facts Interesting video clips and a list of 'good' and 'bad' foods that might be a good starting point. Has anyone followed the diet plan with good effect? I'm feeling I might be losing my way a bit with LCHF (although some of this is down to portion size and eating when I'm not actually hungry rather than eating more carbs) and could do with a stricter diet plan for a few weeks. Not sure I could do Newcastle diet, although I would consider fasting days if someone could give me some guidance.

That's very interesting. I'd heard of William Banting though I thought he recommended just red meat and lots of port! Looking quickly at the dietrevolution has spurred me to get back into harness after slipping from the straight and narrow over the holiday. Not sure that fasting days would be good for diabetics though.

Fasting for non-insulin dependent type 2s is all the rage at the moment, largely due to work done by Jason Fung.

He has done a lot of work with type 2s and has seen huge benefits in terms of reducing medication and normalising blood glucose, but I think it is a very different situation for insulin dependent diabetics.

Thanks @Brunneria I will look up Jason Fung and see what he recommends. I have also just ordered some bitter melon capsules and will see what effect they have!

Hi Kingsland,
I have tried fasting recently and it certainly brings sugars down. I try not to eat on monday, wednesday and friday (slipped a bit over the xmas break) but its good a gave my weight loss a bit of a boost too. Just have tea or coffee with unsweetened soya milk.

I have tablets that have to be taken with food ..so would not try fasting as I don't want to stop taking any of my heart failure tablets ...

Good move.
I think there are a lot of varied reasons for approaching fasting with great care and common sense.

Mine is the fact that i have a history of murderous rages when I hypo.
Well, haven't murdered anyone yet (that i am admitting to on a public forum), and a few hours fasting + running for a bus could tip me over into a hypo hell.

So i am intermittently fasting from carbs and protein, while taking fat (mainly coffeencream)
Very beneficial for the bg though.

Ok so I may give fasting a go and just have coffeencream/tea/water for a day and see how I feel. Fortunately don't have any medications to take nor any other reasons to think that I wouldn't be able to go a day without food (other than lack of willpower!). Better warn the kids at school in case it makes me really crabby (though they may not notice any difference).

Regarding willpower, I found it surprisingly easy to fast now that I'm in ketosis, due to following LCHF. I have felt a real difference compared to my few months on 5:2/4:3 some years ago (before T2D) when I was not low carbing. At the time I thought that LC and IF together would be too much... It's quite the opposite, actually!

Yes, I think LC and IF complement each other.

If you are fasting for the first time its probably better done on a day when you aren't at work. On my first couple of times I found myself getting a little shakey. It was a salt thing and I found drinking a quarter of an oxo cube dissolved in boiling water stopped it. I thnk it was a tip I picked up from Jason Fung's archives. Thankfully I don't get that any more - maybe my body has got used to it).

If you go to the website at https://banting.realmealrevolution.com you can get a free week trial. Lots of interesting videos to watch and you can print the summaries. You can also download food lists and recipes.
I don't think that there is anything particularly new here if you are alrady on a LCHF regime but it's all in one place.

About fasting, I tend to have all my meals within a 10 hour window which seems to suite (I only have 2 meals a day). If I do want to fast then I drink bone broth soup (chicken or beef) with the addition of mushrooms, ginger, chili and tumeric.
