I've had the book 'Barbara Woodhouse - Talking to Animals 'The Woodhouse Way' in my library for years, the book had been handed down through my family and I was always curious about a part in the book I read that caught my attention, about the time i was personally diagnosed with T1D, it described her period in Argentina when she was taken seriously ill with Diabetes and came close to death, she mentions a traditional remedy for diabetes given to her by her cook from the twigs of the Sarandi Blanco Tree (Phyllanthus Sellowianus) that she claims cured her from Diabetes. Was she onto something? I'll leave it open for discussion and criticism.

If you would like to read it as she describes I have scanned and highlighted the pages as a 2 page pdf below for purposes of sharing information so i think it will avoid any copyright problems*.

Her magic twigs were also mentioned on the Watford Observer website;

How interesting :) Do you have any idea of when it was that she experienced this ? I've heard of other remedies used to treat what is essentially Type 2, and wondered if in fact this is what Barbara had ?

She spent some time in Argentina in the 1930's training horses, this was about the time when she fell ill. She was treated with insulin but if you read the account she lost more weight and continued to deteriorate, but the 'magic twigs' have a reputation for lowering blood glucose levels. Her claims are not really akin to being a medical study and i think she was speculating about her condition herself, but what else did she have to go on? If she was T2 she may have been making herself worse by injecting and dropping her bg levels too low.

Fascinating story - did she die of diabetes in the end ?
