BARLEY FOR BLOOD SUGAR AND HEALTH

My first association with barley that I can remember was as a youngster helping my dad unload barley into a bin in our barn. The barn filled with barley dust and shut down my breathing. It was also one of my first experiences with asthma though I did not know it at the time. Since then I have avoided barley as much as possible. Feeding it in small amounts to the cows did not seem to cause the same reaction as a room full of dust, but as a kid unable to breath, it was rather traumatic and had a profound effect on my thoughts about barley, and behavior.

Fast forward to almost 50 years later, my mind has reopened to the positive possibilities of barley. For a number of years, rolled oats have been a staple in my diet. They helped me lose 115 lbs and get off medication for diabetes. However, some new information, at least new to me, has me trying rolled barley which may provide even more benefit than oats.

Ironically, there are some in the natural food industry who believe that rolled barley may actually help asthma (I hope so). Some of the other areas where rolled barley may help is better control of blood sugar, diabetes, arthritis, and other diseases associated with inflammation. This is completely different from being around barley flour or barley dust as I had experienced as a youngster. Barley flour and barley dust can, for some, cause difficulties in breathing associated with asthma.

Wow! I don't know why I've never looked into issues with barley before. I know that as a child I was given Robinsons Barley Watter Water drinks on several occasions and it always gave me a massive fit of coughing and I've avoided it all through my teenage years and into my adult life. Never actually linked it to barley itself though!

I wasn't diagnosed with an asthma type problem until I was in my 30's. I do not respond to conventional asthma med's and believe me, I've tried them all, - thanks for the link, will look into it further.
