I personally have to change mine 2 hours prior to waking up and for two hours after.....
Your son sounds as if he has dawn phenomen... A rising in bloods when he gets up. Just like me.
So long term if weekends he gets up later or earlier you may need a different profile. I get up at 5am weekdays currently, but 8am weekends.... So have to have two different profiles set up.
Have a look at how my basal rates change... Because I get dawn phenomenen. My levels through testing one night at 1,3,5 and 7am and the next night at 2,4,6,8am have really been fine tuned.....
If my levels rise at 5am when I get up I need more for 3 hours....
....
Your sons will vary to my example but:
1) don't worry if the level 2 hours before getting up actually doubles... What ever the insulin that is needed.. Is needed.
2) i would personally test for two nights...
- 1,3,5,7,9 am
- 2,4,6,8,10am.
You should only have to do this chore on these two nights... Not regularly....
