hi everyone im not sure if its my basal or bolus my sugar was (10.4mmol 12.57pm)before meal injected 11 units novorapid normally i inject 10unit for 40grams of carbs but i injected 1 extra unit as sugar level was high (10.4mmol 12.57) (2.30pm 10.3mmol) (12.1mmol 2.54pm) (10.8 mmol 3.22pm) then 5.09pm 6.2mmol) (5.40pm 5.4mmol) and sugar just went to (4.4mmol 6.06pm)also im taking split dose of levemir 13unit morning and 13 units night i wanted to do a basal test but found my sugar level was going low so didnt. trying to figure out if its my bolous or basal any sugesstions

Check that the same food does the same thing every time you eat it before you change basal amounts. It might just be that the breakfast you had raises your blood glucose more than you think and needs a bit more bolus to cover it.

I love and also hate these types of questions! There are so many variables involved in this scenario it's difficult to answer but the simplest answer is a basal test will help

What time and what was breakfast? I guess 10.4 is a higher than normal starting point for you? What did you eat for lunch? assume this pattern doesn't normally happen? there are a million and 1 other questions that could be asked. Novorapid has an action time of around 5hrs, so by 6pm you shouldn't have any IOB, did your BG carry on dipping, or did you start to correct and if so what happened after then.

Or it's just one of those diabetic days...............?:meh:

hi yeah blood sugar was still dipping so had to have some lucozade meal was just normal toast 40grams of carbs with butter on and some tea no sugar

Hi
I’ve been diagnosed last week, I’m on 7units levemir day and night and 1 unit per 15g of nova rapid, these need adjusting as my levels are still a bit high, I was just wondering what a basal test is?

As you have so recently been diagnosed, I would recommend taking advice from your diabetes team on your insulin doses. There is little point in taking a basal test at this stage as you are probably in the honeymoon stage so your basal needs will be fluctuating.
Your BG is likely to be high but, typically, the recommended insulin doses at first are very conservative. This is partially to avoid a hypo and also to give your body a chance to slowly adjust.
Unfortunately, diabetes is not something that is sorted in a couple of days: you need to be patient. But remember when it is sorted, there are many people with diabetes who carry on with a "normal" life. And in some cases (e.g. athletes, actors, politicians, ...) a very un-normal life.
