Having serious issues falling asleep. Once I'm asleep I stay asleep but getting there is hard lately. I have tested bs and I am not going up or down. I have tried multiple kinds of snacks and some nights they work and some not.

I know I have hormone issues going on but this has to stop.

Does anyone need a snack before bed and what is it?

Might seem like an idiot comment, but are you really tired beforehand? I never hit the sack until I'm worn out and if hungry, then some grated cheese. I also sleep in a VERY VERY dark room, switch on some soft soft music or talkback radio and I'm out like a light.

Head + pillow = sleep for me.... anytime of the day!!

Don't know Kristin. Apparently rapidly falling BG is a cause of waking from sleep, but I know no more.

Sleep problems are ghastly. Try some gentlest yoga and concentrating on breathing before bed?

I had severe sleep problems for many years before and after T1 diagnosis. I could lie awake all night and then have to go to work for the day , which was not every pleasant.

One thing have found is I can't sleep if my BS is too low but daily outdoor exercise and reading for at least 30 mins in bed help me to fall asleep quite quickly.

Sleep problems are linked to depression, so might be worth exploring this avenue.

Thanks all,
Yes tired, yes I have a meditation DVD, no not depressed.
I used to read in bed, forgot about that. I do go to bed tired and think I'll sleep and an hour later wide awake.
The light yoga used to work sometimes too. My mind has just been racing and about nothing important.
Thanks for the ideas.

Got a stressful job ? That contributed to my past sleep problems , lying awake with my mind racing all night was a common occurrence.

Um no... Not now. I lost business when I was so sick and never recovered a lot of it but I am ok with that too.. I love my job and I am self employed but good thought. I am taking a trip Sat so thinking about packing, what to eat etc and one of my good friends 27 year old son died Sunday so that's been on my mind too. I seem to go through these stupid phases and even herbal sleep supps don't work and if they do of course they raise bs. Last night I got up at 1 and had a glass of cab and a few nuts and went to sleep. This works but not a habit I want to get into nightly.

When I have lots of thoughts going round and round preventing me from sleeping I make lists! Organising my thoughts on paper helps. I also need to read to make me tired it's a habit now. Hope you find something that works for you

Samantha,
I did come downstairs and write everything I needed to do down. That does work for me too.

Probably just a hormone phase but still....annoying . Wrecks the next day

Hi @Kristin251 I'm sorry if my postings was a bit flippant, it was not intended. Though it probably describes my current relationship with bed, it was not always such.
Looking back I suspect the stress from a number of inputs really did trash my ability to get to sleep "on demand". These were both on the home and work front. Years of post-docing on soft money and in the end not getting a tenured position really did my head in... and little sleep. I now work in the private sector for the last ten years so that is done... now wake from nightmares relating to missed grant application deadlines and not publishing.. combined with an autistic son, who would take ages to get to sleep it was years of being a zombie... he sleeps now!
As @Mike D suggested I found late night/early morning talk radio helped me nod off... Major League Baseball was best on AFM, which beamed games to Europe.
I always find clean sheets can really up the going to bed experience but there are limits to how much laundry can be done.
I wish you better sleep nights.

Thanks Hank. I didn't take it adversely at all, more just envious.

Perhaps I should have my husband talk about work lol. He designs friction material. Couldn't get much more boring for ME.

I agree with freshly laundered sheets but also not willing to wash them every night.
Some days without sleep I would think I slept for hours and some days very groggy but I could be groggy even on a good night

Seems you had lots of stress and I am glad things mellowed. I can't say I have any of that stress, knock on wood.

Hopefully it's just the planetary charts and alignments haha and it will go away soon or I might become a wino.

With me it is usually either caffeine, stress, not enough activity during day.

a few yoga stretches often helps, or some stair running.

You are very low carb (from your other posts). Insomnia is a fairly well known side effect of low carbing. You may find it interesting to have a rummage through lc and paleo sites for info on it. :)

Never thought of not enough activity. Hmm...
I have been v,c for years.
Now I'm thinking hormones as bs is running slightly higher today and last few days slightly lower. This can be a pattern I forgot about but other good tips to keep in mind.
Funny thing is days I run higher I am not hungry at all and days I run lower I am hungry all day. I am only talking 10 points but generally I stay exactly the same.

I can't imagine what it must be like to have sleep problems. I hit the pillow and am off in 5 minutes. The usual advice I've read is no TV, no computers immediately before bedtime, no supper, no caffeine, and nothing but water from after evening meal onwards, plus a trip round the garden in the fresh air last thing can help. (easy if you have dogs!). Hunger won't help.

I hope you resolve it.
