Hi all, type one diabetes over weight by six stone, just starting low carb - no more than 50g wants to get fit, what would be the best exercise to start with, straight into the shread DVD or something else xd

Try some gentle walking to start off with then increase your exercise when you start to feel fitter, just be careful when exercising as it can reduce your bg quite quickly and lead to hypo's, you may need to reduce your insulin to compensate or eat extra carbs.

Good luck and well done on taking the initiative! :)

Nic,

Just seen your first post so I would suggest you speak with your Ophthalmology team first before starting any exercise routine.

Thank you, now recovering from a viterious haemorrhage which has scared me so much, I realise now I need to sort myself out :$ x

That is why you should check first with your Ophthalmology team Nic.

Hi Nic

In my part of Wales, the South, the Health Authority has introduce the Steps programme in conjunction with the Council's Leisure Centres. I was put forward by the Practice Nurse and after an initial interview at the Sports Centre where my health, weight and blood pressure was discussed.
I went for the twice a week option. I spend an hour doing light exercise on a Circuit Course involving standing exercises, stretching, bending and light weights and the occaisional session in the gym on treadmills, rowing machines and exercise bikes. Each session lasts an hour and my council charge of £1.40 for this. At the start we had our blood pressure checked and after warm-up exercises
Now that the 6 month term of Steps is over I have continued on the Low Intensity Circuits. Blood pressure charks are not now done. I now do two or three sessions a week. A relatively easy exercise and with a group of about 15 similar people, ages and ability. Apart from some walking this is the only exercise I do. I would like to do loads of swimming but am afraid of picking up infections in my legs. My dad had both legs amputated twenty years ago and my poor circulation could lend itself to problems if I caught an infection in an open wound.
Try your local Leisure Centre, mine is really helpful and are glad to see the unfit members of the public.

I found that walking 45 minutes to one hour after eating not only reduced my sugar levels, but also helped me lose weight. I started gently as I'd had a stroke and now 11 months later I'm 5 stone lighter and walking 3-5 miles a day after my breakfast.
