Being referred to consultant for a pump, any advice/what to expect?

Hi All,

I've just had my Typing bloods back after being assessed as T1D in the hospital (A&E - presentation was textbook T1D but they had to wait for the bloods, just procedure) and it confirmed I am definitely Type 1. My DSN is happy to refer me to the consultant for a pump/HCL potentially, so I was just wondering what to expect?

For context: she is referring me as although my control is good so far, it is at the cost of my eating/health (not on purpose) and I am struggling immensely with the injections - it is impacting my mental health and daily life also (if it helps to know, I also have neurodevelopmental conditions that are contributing to my difficulties).

I think she is going to be referring me to Manchester as where I live does not have a pump/HCL clinic.

Thank you in advance all.

Hi AnimateRach. Great question. My consultant asked why I wanted a pump now (I’d rejected one years ago because they were so clumsy and uninspiring) and what I hoped to get from it that I currently didn’t achieve. I mentioned other health issues (arthritis in my hands) and he understood where I was coming from. He also enquired what sort of pump I wanted (tubeless because I don’t want tubes getting detached etc). There were also other healthcare professionals present (dietician, diabetes nurse, trainee) who all asked questions but nothing earth shattering or unusual. Basically we were all ticking boxes and my consultant was happy to go ahead. Don’t be afraid, they’re all on your side. I had to wait for a few months because of administrative reasons before I had the training, fingers crossed that you’re at the right time of their schedule. Good luck.
