hello everyone. is anybody out there currently taking benfotiamine (the fat soluble form of vitamin B1 aka thiamine). if so, what daily doses are people taking and what are the effects/side-effects?.

if nothing else, then a completely pigheaded unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Hi Timo welcome to the forum

I have been taking benfotiamine for a long time now, I started off for a week on 650mg then up to 700mg, now just 100mg as maintenance, I have never had any side effects at all, eve when I took the highest dose.

All the best

Challenges can be stumbling blocks or stepping stones, it depends how you view them

Where do you get this ,Karen? I just take vit B complex although I know its the thiamine that is supposed to help the most.

Knowledge is the key to control

Sue, I tend to buy it either from abroad (Germany/Austria/Switzerland) or latest one on ebay

or Nutricentre in the UK, you could also ask your GP to presribe it for you but its a bit of a long shot, I frequently go over to Austria and Switzerland and tend to stock up there.

I am happy to bring you some back and post to you, let me know next trip is due in April.

Love

Hi
Benfotiamine is readily available in the UK over the internet from companies such as "Doctors Best."
I did a lot of research before starting taking Benfotiamine. I have had Type 1 Diabetes for 36 years since age 8 with minimal complications & still live a very active lifestyle.
For what it is worth, I have noticed a decrease in the frequency of finger numbness & increased energy since stating to take this suppliment over the last 18 months. Also previous mild retinal problems seem to have not progressed at all since starting with it.
This are only my personal experiences & in no way should be taken as anything other than that. However, I certainly will not be discontinuing taking Benfotiamine anytime soon.
I hope this gives some hope to someone.
Best wishes, Chris.

It's supposed to be protective of kidneys

Hi Chris, thanks for that information - and welcome to the forum.

Hi Dennis,
Thanks for the welcome !
From what I can gather, the use of Benfotiamine seems to be general amongst diabetics in Germany & quite common in the USA. I always feel a bit wary about recommending it to others as research in the UK seems to be ongoing & opinion about it's benfits varied. I can only speak from my own personal experiences which have so far been very positive. However, after continually searching for ways to minimise the effects of diabetes over the years, I am more excited about Benfotiamine than anything for a long time.
I would also like to add that I have my parents to thank who from my first diagnosis at age 8 always instilled the importance of good control. Life with diabetes now compared to 30 + years ago has changed immeasurably. I am hoping that the benefits of Benfotiamine will be recognized as one of those notable landmarks in the history of diabetes control.
Best wishes, Chris.
