Genetically predisposed yes!! I was told that it was only because of my good eating habits and exercise I didn't get diabetes until I was in my 50's. It happened after I returned from 2 weeks working in India, living in 4 * hotel with buffet help yourself meals and I went mad- especially with all the wonderful fruit!! In the following weeks I had a dry mouth at night with my tongue sticking to the roof of my mouth. I had to go to the bathroom numerous times in the night and was thirsty and I realised I needed a blood test . My HbA1c was 6.8 so I went on a low carb/low GI diet and for the next few years it was in the 5's. It is only recently it has started the climb and there isn't much more I can do diet wise other than fasts and with the nightly classes at the gym I do no way could I do that. My husband is well overweight - probably 18 stones and his diet is disgusting. Some days he eats total carbs - toast and more toast and meat pies and sweet ones. He eats 6 sweet biscuits at a time and does no aerobic exercise but does walk more he did In 2016 his HbA1C was 4.9!!! Just checked his last one this year and it was 39 = 5.7 so it is going up!!! No diabetes in his family!!
