Hi all, I'm slowly getting to grips with lo carbing. I've cut out most fast acting carbs and I'm ploughing my way through "Diabetes Solution". I have just found out from reading this book, that the insulin I am on (Novomix 30) contains something called Protamine which can stimulate the immune system to make antibodies to insulin which can mean it could impair the fine tuning control which is sought on a low-carb diet. Bernstein strongly opposes the use of these mixed insulins. I've been on Novomix since I became diabetic.

I would really like to tightly control my blood glucose and am wondering if it's time to change. I never liked injecting because I found it painful, but thanks to Bernstein, I'm now injecting pain-free so don't mind going on 4 injections a day.

I don't know anything about any other inuslin and I would prefer to go to the diabetic nurses fully armed with info, so I'm looking for information on what insulin regime works well with a lo-carb diet and what insulin you would recommend.

Hi there

I was on 28 u lantus with 4-6 u novorapid with meals, now I am on 24u lantus and not taking the novorapid at all, taking metformin twice a day. That's worked for me - hope that helps

Hi Carol,
I had 4 years on Novomix 30, when they thought I was Type 2. When I was correctly diagnosed as Type 1 last September I was changed to basal/bolus......Lantus and Novorapid. I now inject 5 times a day and have to admit, it offers more flexibility. The trouble with a mixed insulin like Novomix 30, if low-carbing, is that you'll need less of the fast-acting insulin but you can't adjust one without the other, if it's pre-mixed. Sorry, that probably sounds confusing. I'll try again. If you are on basal/bolus, you can set your long-acting at one level and adjust your fast-acting to suit what you are eating....with Novomix, that is not really possible, as it is pre-mixed for you.
If you don't mind the extra jabs, basal/bolus will probably be more flexible for you but be prepared....it takes a lot of fine adjusting when you first change over. I'm still trying to get my dosaging correct but for all the faffing about, I do think, long-term, basal/bolus, is preferable for most folks on insulin, if wanting to to try different dietary ways.
All the best, chocoholic.
