What equipment is reported to be the best? Not necessarily the cheapest but the most accurate and reliable. I think the one I have may be useless and I don't want to approach the nurse as she will try to hold my mouth open and pour cheapo medication down it before giving me a chance to monitor myself and reduce.

I don't know MOST accurate or reliable, but I find my ONETOUCH UltraEasy is quite good on both points.
call them up http://www.lifescan.co.uk/ or 0800 121 200 (UK) or 1800 535 676 (Ireland) and tell them you are testing and you want to use one of their meters and they will send you one for free!

I have been using the optium exceed for a number of years (its that old had to pay for it in those days), now using the Bayer contour next USB (Thanks to Bayer as they sent it for free) and did a comparion of reading (very small sample) and the readings were the same or only 0.1 difference.
