Hello

I am starting the LCHF diet and I am not too sure what the best yoghurts are to have???

Can anyone help please??

Thank you :) x

Hi

I find its best to read and compare the labels. Many yoghurts have LOTS of sugar in them, especially the low fat ones!

It will depend on where you shop but I generally buy fromage frais (tesco own brand is 3.3g carb per 100g). Then I add fresh berries and cinnamon, or use it to make' chocolate mousse' - yum!

Ooo Okay then I will have a look about then! :)

I would say natural yogurt which is full fat. Not the flavoured ones as these tend to have a lot of sugar in.

However I would test and see what effect it has on your sugar levels as it may still raise them a lot

Must be plain :( but full fat is great. I like Greek ones with blueberries mixed in. Low fat and full fat fruit ones have 10-16% sugar. With low fat, they swap the fat for sugar - huge con!

I like Asda's Extra special Greek yogurt - both low fat and ordinary are 4g carbs per 100g. Or the Total ones. The 0% is 4g per 100g and the 2% or full fat are 3.8g. The Asda own brand has a creamy taste and isn't as sharp which suits me better as I'm eating it with unsweetened rhubarb!

Like some others have said I'd also go for natural yogurt, full fat generally seems better for me in terms of blood sugar response and also seems to fill me up for longer
I get bottles of various pure extracts (extracts rather than flavourings - more expensive but a much better taste) -vanilla, orange, lemon, cinnamon & ginger are my favourites -from lakeland and add some of that, some Splenda / stevia, some toasted almonds and / or some berries to full fat natural goats milk yogurt for breakfast or a light lunch
. I wouldn't have it if my pre meal sugars are above a 6 as it puts my sugars up by 2-3 points

The Lidl full fat Greek one is gorgeous. Comes in 1kg as well as smaller. It's 3.2g in 100g carbs x

Thank you all! I will have to have a look about and find the one I like as I am hoping to have it for breakfast, as I do not like egg! xx

I alternate between Fage Total Natural Greek full fat (3.8 carbs per 100g) and Alpro Simply Plain Soya yogurt (2 carbs per 100g) both with some fresh or frozen raspberries or strawberries thrown in. I love both of them.

Won't the strawberries/raspberries bring your sugars up???

It's a case of testing before you eat them and after to see what effect they have on you. Berries and stewed rhubarb have the lowest carbs I think so a small amount of them plus some cream or yogurt seems to be ok for most of the people I've read on here. Hopefully the same will be true for you. Are you testing?
Also my grandad's DN said to eat them as part of a main meal not hours later as a snack as this is better for your BS- whether that is true , I don't know.

Yes, if you eat a whole punnet! ;) The trick is to portion control. 65g of raspberries are 3 carbs. 40g of strawberries are 3 carbs. Mixed with the fat from the yogurt the spike should be minimal, but not everyone reacts the same to every food. You need to try and test.

Ah I understand why his DN said to eat them as a main meal because they will go in with the carbs so it will be slow releasing! I don't think that works with me anymore as I am on the pump now but I am not sure! It will just have to be trial and errors and having to come up with cheap Low Carb dinners too! :S x

Oh! I never knew that really!

Patrick Holford - Say no to Diabetes - states you can eat the whole punnet without spiking. Obviously you need to test.

I have found that full fat Greek youghurt (10% in Denmark) will work for me.

I have even found (incidentally) a very nice desert including Greek youghurt. Take a handful of frozen strawberries, blueberries or raspberries out of your freezer. Put them in a smallish bowl, pour on youghurt (you may add a bit of sweetener - I know that many are totally off sweeteners - I am as well, so will only add them on this occasion.

After the youghurt hits the frozen berries, it will kind of turn into an icecream look-alike and taste-alike..
