better levels after eating fruit

Both apples and pears are both classed as low-gi in the glycaemic index table. Anything below 55 is considered low, and these two fruits are both rated at 38. I eat these fruits too, as well as oranges which are rated at 44. I normally eat my fruit after my main meals, I find that my bg's remain within my target range and stay stable thereafter, always staying around the 5-6 mark.

As I eat a reduced carb diet (not low) I can't answer your question completely, and I am type 1 and use insulin to cover my food also. It is good that you are getting good results with fruit, they are essential as part of a healthy diet, nutritious and a good source of fibre.

I too can't answer completely because I do not take oral meds like you. But I do low carb. I have gained good control and decided to have quarter of an apple after a normal (for me) lunch the other day - I had been only eating berries up till then. This was just to test the water - and I made sure it was the only variable in that meal. The apple had no effect at all and I will try a whole one soon. I am making an assumption that my body's use of my own insulin may have improved by now (8 months) so some experimentation is called for to widen my options. It's good that things have improved for you and it may be that insulin use does improve if it's given a chance - which both you and I have. Someone will know!

I seem to be able to eat almost any fruit without it causing me any problems with blood glucose levels. I eat on a regular basis - apples, pears, satsumas, bananas, grapes, plums, kiwi etc - plus a wide range of berry fruits. I eat loads of fruit every day and carry it about with me wherever I go and snack on it at spaced out intervals.

I've previously posted quite detailed results of testing that I carried out before and after eating fruit. Here are the details:

6.7 - Before eating
Grapes - 125g
5.9 - 30 mins after finishing eating
6.8 - one hour after finishing eating
5.5 - 90 mins after finishing eating

4.7 - Before eating
Apple - 225g - i.e. large
6.8 - one hour after finishing eating

Figs - 100g - four small figs
5.8 - one hour after finishing eating

5.4 - Before eating
Satsuma - 80g - i.e. small
5.1 - one hour after finishing eating

4.6 - Before eating
Apple - 125g - i.e. small/medium
5.5 - one hour after finishing eating

Satsuma - 80g - i.e. small
5.7 - one hour after finishing eating

Apple - 150g - i.e. medium
4.9 - one hour after finishing eating

Satsuma - 80g - i.e. small
4.6 - one hour after finishing eating

Apple - 190g - i.e. large
3.6 - one hour after finishing eating

Satsuma - 80g - i.e. small
3.8 - one hour after finishing eating

3.9 - before eating
Apple - 360g - i.e. absolutely massive - possibly the biggest apple I have ever eaten
6.6 - one hour after finishing eating

Banana - 100g - i.e. small
5.1 - one hour after finishing eating

I eat plenty of different Fruits. However, I always test at intervals of 1, 2 and 3 hrs, sometimes 4 hrs as I found some fruits get absorbed more slowly so the 'spikes' don't show up until much later than 1 hr or 90 mins
.
Banana's for instance......
1 hr after eating one......Bg 5.6
2 hrs.........................6.9
3 hrs.........................10.4 Eeek !
4 hrs..........................8 on the way down again.

So, don't take it as read that they are all safe to eat just because somebody else can......test, test, test. We all react differently to such foods. sometimes I just eat half a Banana to keep Bg under control and still eat what I want.

Hi sqeezy,
It may well be that it was not the fruit that was causing the problems in the first place. You have obviously lowered your carbs since then and is possibly the reason why.
As cugila has pointed out, you cannot follow someone else and expect to get the same results so do use your meter when adding new foods.
Bananas, melon, kiwi fruits send my sugars into orbit and I have good control, we are all different.

Another thing to consider also is portion size and weight. Fruit, like any other food will impact more or less depending on the amount you consume.

Just thought I would add this to what's already been said.
