I am in hospital, receiving antifungal treatment. I woke up to find nurse about to give me glucose drip followed by sodium lactate drip. My BG has not been low according to finger pricks, now 8.3 when I had a low carb meal about 4 hours ago. It showed low on my Libre sensor, which has obviously been faulty and now gives a premature replace senso6 instruction. I am on Metformin only, so as I understand, hypos not an issue.

A glucose drip seems to be wrong and a search shows sodium lactate a bad first choice hydration for diabetics. Anyone with experience of either or any idea why they might be prescribed?

Have you asked the nurse who prescribed you the glucose drip and why? And if they considered your diabetes without medication with a hypo risk when prescribing?

I hope you'll feel better soon!

I have not had that experience when in-patient!
I think that you are sensible to query those drips. I agree with @Antje77. Find out why and by whom the drips were prescribed. It is amazing how little some medical staff know about diabetes, and treatments be it Type1, Type2, or the rearer types.

I guess there will be a junior doctor (or as they are now called resident doctor) visiting the ward in the morning, if not a ward-round with a consultant. That will be your opportunity to ask the Doctor/Consultant in charge of your treatment if he/she has spoken with a diabetes specialist or a diabetes nurse about your treatment.

Good luck.

My recent stint as an in-patient showed me beyond doubt that the nurses had no training in and no knowledge of diabetes management, and I had to be out-of-character forceful to stop some very medically stupid procedures being given me. Good luck with fighting your corner.
