Your Sainsbury's ready meal contained 56g of carbs, according to the nutrition info in the link you supplied. This is a very large amount for a diabetic and it is not surprising your sugar levels went up. As a general rule, it is best to avoid most pasta, potatoes, cereals, bread, flour products and rice, never mind how "brown", grainy or low GI they are. Do always look at the nutrition information. The bit that concerns you is "carbohydrates". Ignore the bits about sugars.
It sounds as if it is very important that you DO test for a while, until you have learnt what foods suit you and what doesn't.
Keep testing and you WILL get there!

Thanks, I thought I was already all sorted with all of this but since I stopped testing old habits have crept in. I notice I am much higher an hour after meals, should I pay attention to that reading or just the 2 hour one?

You should pay attention to both readings, though it's not essential that you actually do two, just know what you are aiming for at particular times. Our rule is never above 7 at one hour, never above 6 at two hours. However, there are some meals which spike later and you need to look out for these. Typically late spikers would be meals with a lot of fat, as well as some carbs, but "real" porridge, the sort that takes ages to cook, also spikes late in this household.

Thanks for the advice. Home cooked meal tomorrow for me with plenty of fresh veg. Will see how my BG is 2 hours after that.

I personally only test after two hours. As long as that reading is below 7 I am fairly relaxed. I reason that if I avoid snacks and eat only four times a day, then there are only four hours out of twenty four when my BG is higher than normal
I am diet controlled and my Hb is 5.9, so I think this works.

The odd random spike is not too concerning. However, regular and it raises the odd eyebrow. We all have 'naught moments;' hey we're human lol.
This obv differs between type 1's and 2's as to what post-prandial readings are acceptable. Also depends on what insulin regime you are on. My daily average is 5.5-5.8. However, the biggest blip was when I went out for a meal and ate far too many carbs and a desert :-( (11.5!)

Prob is I am on Humalin M3 with 2 injections a day so sometimes my post-lunch readings are high. Not on basal-blus yet.
