Some thoughts from experience over 51 years on insulin, but not to be taken as professional advice or opinion:
1) It would have been interesting to see what your BSL was say 2 1/2 hours after the BBQ ? higher than 1.5 hours and 4 hours?
2) Some people find their Lantus runs out before 24 hours. Are you taking it morning or night ? Either you are taking it at night and this somehow copes with your after breakfast blood sugar levels and even if it runs out less than 24 hours the boluses cover it., or taking it in morning and having very little carbs for breakfast. So taking a BSL say 2 to 2 1/2 hours after breakfast might show you how well insulin is controlling that.
3) I am thinking of the usual basal-bolus I used to do with short-acting insulin before each meal.
