Hello,

My ratio for food has just been changed and my levels have come right down since (new type 1). I thought I would check 1.5 hours after my lunch today just to see what it's doing. It was 8.5 before lunch, had a BBQ only carbs were potatoes and 2 rolls - also had half a choc ice that I didn't account for. Just tested my sugar and it's 5.5... I'm not sure if that's quite low considering I'm at the peak time after having my bolus and eating?

What are the average levels for after eating food - is mine a bit lower than it should be?

Thank you in advance

Hi there.
1) knowing what insulin you are prescribed would help
2) the peak blood sugar after a meal might vary, for some it peaks nearer 2 hours after eating
3) eating fat in the meat say, of a BBQ might slow down the absorption of carbs so that the peak blood sugar is delayed
4) maybe the new ratio has boosted the insulin dose up so much. Did you have any hypo symptoms later on ?

Suspect that your carbs may still be rising yet due to fat content involved. 2 potatoes and 2 rolls and half a choc ice is quite a lot of carbs. 1.5 hours after is not a lot of time. May be wrong, certainly keep an eye on it.

Thank you, I'm on Lantus 10 units and then novorapid with the ratio 1:20 for lunch and dinner! That's interesting to know! No I had no hypo symptoms - sugar actually was higher before dinner had gone up to 7.8, this was about 4 hours later!

Thank you for that info.
Some thoughts from experience over 51 years on insulin, but not to be taken as professional advice or opinion:
1) It would have been interesting to see what your BSL was say 2 1/2 hours after the BBQ ? higher than 1.5 hours and 4 hours?
2) Some people find their Lantus runs out before 24 hours. Are you taking it morning or night ? Either you are taking it at night and this somehow copes with your after breakfast blood sugar levels and even if it runs out less than 24 hours the boluses cover it., or taking it in morning and having very little carbs for breakfast. So taking a BSL say 2 to 2 1/2 hours after breakfast might show you how well insulin is controlling that.
3) I am thinking of the usual basal-bolus I used to do with short-acting insulin before each meal.
Best Wishes.

Ah okay that's very interesting to know! I take my basal at 10:30pm. In some instances I've had a longer sleep and therefore breakfast is later meaning I'm testing about 2 1/2 hours after for my before lunch test (so far has been high because ratio was incorrect).

I am seeing a nurse at a new surgery this coming week so will be interesting to see what she says about it all!
