BG Confusion

Hi All,

I am having a confused moment with BG's and wondered if anyone could help. I am managing my Diabetes right now with diet (low carb) and exercise. Blood sugars I am seeing before food in the 5.5s (well this week anyway) and generally come down to the same 2 hours after eating.

I tested half a slice of Buergen bread today. Before eating was 5.2 but I decided to take a test an hour after eating it which was 9.8! 2 hours after eating it I was around 5.8. I understand the 2 hour levels are fine but the 1 hour spike is the worrying thing for me. With foods like this , is it important to test 1 hour after eating aswell to see how high the spike goes? If I hadn't tested an hour after I wouldn't have known but does this mean Buergen is a no go for me?

Thanks

Hi and welcome,
I would go by the two hour test as it would of made your sugar spike because of the carbs but please don't worry, you are doing really well.
Plase keep in touch if you need any more help.
Take care
Tracey

Thanks for the reply Tracey,

Yes I understand that the 2 hours are OK and realise there will be a certain spike after eating but wondered if there was a safe limit or if it does indeed spike to over 9 after an hour whether then it is a question of how quickly it goes down.

I am eating very little carbs right now and it's been helping tremendously with my levels but looking to introduce half a slice of Burgen here and there :) As I understand it's the spikes we should be watching out for just a little confused about the where and when in respects to time and levels when testing.

Don't worry about the one hour spike. Most food gives us our highest reading at about one hour. The reason for a two hour test is to see how well your Pancreas copes in producing enough insulin to bring it back down to normal after 2 hours. Yours is doing great! If the 1 hour spike was TOO high, then you wouldn't be back down to good levels at 2 hours. There is loads of discussion about individual spikes causing damage, but non-diabetics can reach almost 8 and possibly higher after certain foods, so don't concern yourself. Concentrate on the 2 hour and you'll be doing all you can to best manage your diabetes. Well done on your results so far.

Briliant, thanks Grazer for ironing this out and I am very happy I can introduce Burgen. I think something to try also if I am concerned when I eat it again I'll go for a half hour walk after. It's the first bread I have eatan in 2 months and BOY did it taste good!!! :)

Thanks again, you've been very reassuring and helful.

Try a piece of cheese or ham with the bread to slow down the one hour spike. Also you didnt say which burgen bread you had. there are many different types now and the carbs do vary i think the soy and linseed is the lowest

Lol im using my phone at mo cant see a thing. im having the results of hba1c and colesteral tomorrow so hopefully i will have a big weight lifted

Hello,

Yes I had Linseed variety with a couple of pieces of ham and Pistachios.

Good Luck with your results tomorrow!
