Hi all, I have been eating low carb for a couple of years now with closer attention for the last year, I now feel healthier, fitter, slimmer and more energetic than for years. My last 3 Hba1c results have been 38, 38 and 39 and now for the first time in 11 years I am med free (pending my next Hba1c) What puzzles me is despite all this I almost never see a BG test of less than 8 and this has gone up in the last year or so as my other"markers" have got better. Puzzled? you betcha!

I would ask when you are testing. If you are only testing after meals you may be missing much longer periods of low blood sugar and the numbers can balance out. Maybe try testing morning fasting, pre meal, 1 hour post meal, and 2 hour post meal for a day or 2. You also may be running fairly low all night. The only way to know is to test in the middle of the night. Those are beautiful A1c numbers, I wish I could say the same.

Thank you for the reply, I have tested at loads of different times and with two different machines, all I will say is that it no longer worries me as long as I feel healthy, I think that`s probably a good marker along with good Hba1c results (11 years ago I was diagnosed with Hba1c of almost 25 in old numbers)

Limitations of HbA1c tests
Whilst HbA1c tests are usually reliable, there are some limitations to the accuracy of the test. For example, people with forms of anaemia may not have sufficient haemoglobin for the test to be accurate and may need to have a fructosamine test instead.

Could you be anaemic?

Your HbA1c is great but I would also be puzzled with your readings. Using a converter

would suggest your average is 6.5. So unless you only test about an hour after a meal it does seem strange. Is your meter OK? Have you been tested by GP or nurse?
I have an old onetouch ultra and a new sd codefree and they tally roughly. My GP does not carry out blood glucose tests, I do my own on a day to day basis and the hospital does my A1c. I don`t count carbs but I avoid them wherever possible and it`s perfectly possible that physiological insulin resistance could be playing a part here, I could also be eating too much protein thereby triggering gluconeogenesis I guess?

If I am anaemic then all I can say is that it`s left me feeling healthier than ever! Seriously though, I have a full panel every time I have an A1c and I`m sure it would have been picked up by now.

Holy cow, I thought I was high at 10.4%. (6.7 now) You do have a puzzle but as long as you feel great and your numbers reflect that then I would not worry either if I was you. It does seem odd though.

So just be grateful for good results. I did look up to see what could affect the results but as you say your GP would have picked up on that.
