I’m surprised that activity will cause the bg to go up. I would have thought that activity would lower it. That said, it has often surprised me that I can get a low glucose warning around 4.4 which wakes me, then after rising it goes up. Is this normal then?

It's not the activity of itself - it's that your liver will start making glucose in response to the activity. The body's system is dynamic and always changing.
