I am a type 1 with reasonably good control (latest HBa1c 7.2%) but trying to improve whilst also exercising more. As a result of exercise my basal dose has reduced to only 4 units otherwise overnight I was getting a hypos. Now I notice that after waking at 6 and usually walking the dogs for 30 minutes my BG will increase by c4 mmol/l. I assume this is the Dawn phenomenon but what should I do. Have breakfast and a bolus injection immediately I get up? Or have a very small bolus injection as normally I would have my breakfast a bit later

some have had a little bit of luck preventing dawn syndrome by eating just a few nuts, eg brazil, stomach knows it has been given food tells liver to stop trying to be helpful. doesnt work for everyone maybe worth a wee try for you? i'm guessing you've checked morning level via finger prick (at least on occassion) i've found usually cgm reads around ~1 lower than fingerprick (when getting up) for at least 20-30 mins (which have put down to possible compression low).

My sugars climb steadily from around 4am, then more rapidly once I actually wake.
I also keep the pen by the bed and bolus very first thing when I open my eyes, even if I want to laze in bed a bit at the weekend, or don't plan on having breakfast soon.
