Hi, can any one advise if high spikes following exercise are normal for a Type 2

Today after a breakfast, of bacon sausage, mushroom and tea, no sugar (still not used to this none in tea), I rode my bike to work which took 40 mins,

My ride is 80% farm track 20% road and I try and use a gear that is just higher than is comfortable to give muscles some work to do.

My BG readings from freestyle Libre were:
6.3 taken at start of my ride (about 30 mins after breakfast)
12.6 1hr 40 mins later (time includes ride to work)
9.2 1hr 10 min later (2 hrs 50min after 6.3 reading)
8.3 15 mins later (3 hours 5 mins after 6.3 reading)

The 12.6 seems high to me, but is that because I am still new to this world of Type 2, I was told of spikes following meals and exercise, but such a high jump was a bit of a wake up, so is this jump to be expected.

I have the spike with weight lifting, with brisk walking my BG is going down. 12.6 is high, but it takes some time on LCHF to clean up the body - the BG will go down. The period was 14 days in my case to bring BG under 5.7 before meal. Be patient, keep LC and excercise.

@rom35, thanks for your reply - hopefully the start of my LCHF diet will give my bloods a Spring Clean soon.

The 12.6 spike alarmed me a little, as I was not expecting that.

Just trying to understand why it was that high, and if a warning (and for what and what do I change to stop it - e.g. ease up on pushing myself during exercise when on bike to stop sugar dump from muscles)

I had the same problem, and my blood glucose test results after exercise remained high for weeks. It worried me too, but I persisted because I am TOFI (Thin Outside, Fat Inside) and building muscle is one of the best ways of normalising TOFI blood glucose. In his book "Fighting insulin resistance with strength training" Dr William Shang recommends exercising muscles to exhaustion. That sort of stress will raise blood glucose, but the body adapts. The strange thing is, in my case the BG result didn't gradually reduce, but sudenly fell to normal.

Your metabolismus is in inconsistent state now. Do not do much conclusions right now. Wait till the number before dinner will be under 5.7. (My pancreas is sleeping whole forenoon - works as expected only afternoon :) )

Exercise can raise you blood sugars which is logical when you think about it you need more energy so your liver dumps sugar into your system to be taken up by the muscles. By breaking down fat which is what your after.

Looking at your numbers its important to see that there going down.
The more you do this the less Insulin Resistant IR your muscles will become and these numbers will spike less and lower at a quicker pace. This is why many people find that exercise lowers bg levels after they have been doing it regularly there body's become more efficient/ effective at doing this.

Initial spike of 12.6 I would assume is a combination of intake of food and exercise combined.
There is an argument for eating a high protein meal after instead of before as the protein takes longer to convert into fuel (less of a bg spike) and that fuel should be sent to the mussel to repair micro damage caused by exercise.

An importation thing to remember is muscles continue to burn fuel up to 24 hours after you finish exercising. Which is why the numbers are going down. ;)

Thanks for all the replies.

Well just done a finger prick test and now BG is 5.3 before I have something to eat then head off home.

This new world of rise and falls in my BG is like the stock market - always up and down

Glad I found this section :) I have same problem. I am classed as Type 2 for last 2 years but i am quite active and play sports. I have seen my BG always going up after exercise. Will wait for more days on LC to see if it stabilises.

As I understand it your body fat releases stored sugar to provide energy for the work (exercise) your body us doing. When you stop exercising and then immediately test your blood sugar you will get an artificially high trading because of this. I would suggest wsiting an hour or two before testing after exercise

After persevering with gym, today I noticed that my BS only rose by .2 mmol/l after some weights in gym. Admittedly it was not very heavy session but still I was sweating. 5.9 fasting to 6.1 after gym.
