Could stress have a major affect on BG levels?

I noticed on friday that my waking BG had went up from 8.8 to 10.3 inside 2 hours, simply by driving to work, then on both mornings of the weekend i performed similarly timed tests and on both occasions BG levels dropped from about 7.5 to 7.0.

Back to work this morning and level went from 7.9 to 11.6 with nil by mouth

Not sure myself but it would seem to be the case. I have been in 6's for last few days except for today when was 7.9 this am - stressed because was going to hospital for glucose tolerance test. There will be others on this forum who do know though and I am quite interested to find out cos I also have a stressful job. :)

Hi Hooly I assume from your post that you are not eating any breakfast. If you don't eat in the morning your body via your liver keeps producing glucose for the perceived energy output of the day.If you eat breakfast then the liver stops 'dumping' glucose into the system because you have eaten so your BS stops rising so dramatically.

I do know that with T1 yes stress can effect your BG levels... The reason for the effect is that when someone becomes stressed diabetic or non-diabetic hormones such as adrinaline raise and this is what causes the BG to raise... So if would make sense that it would happen in the case of T2 as well..

In gerneral one would expect a raise but it is also possible to have a drop if you have a shock type stess... I know that when I'm at work and recieve a bite off one of the dogs that I handle then I have to turn my pump up for a hour+ after its happened because my body reaction if raise of BG...

My job can be quite stressful, but on both these occasions i was totally relaxed. This morning i was totally relaxed prior to the 11.6 reading :D

I had started taking breakfast after reading that elsewhere on the site, but this past few days i've been trying to gauge what sort of fasting reading the practice nurse will get in the morning.....after the 11.2 i rang up and cancelled!!

If my livers gonna dump glucose on the morning of the fasting test, then they are simply going to throw medication at me, and i think i can get this under control with diet alone given a couple more weeks. And perhaps a friday morning test as opposed to a tuesday.

Its hard to know if it was some sort of allergic reaction to work that caused rise on friday and monday or the few drinks i had fri & sat that caused the drops sat & sun...trial & error :)

You have to fast from 10pm usually.Try eating a good protein based meal just before that and see what you BS is like in the morning.Do a trail run first!!

Yup, happens to Type 2s also, it's the reverse side of the system, the stress hormones affect glucagon which will cause the liver to up its glucose release. Except for sometimes of course when it will reduce instead.

i asked my doc about this last week as i had a very hairy morning at work and by lunchtime was totally pooped like i had been before diagnosis ie couldn't think straight knack'd etc, also the bs was quite a bit higher for me whereas by lunch i am starting to come down

the answer i got was that adrenalin is fight or flight (like i didn't know) and it can affect us, not really any news in that so interested if there is anything a bit more medically concrete on this?

unfortunately my job runs on adrenalin far more than i would choose so if there is something i can do to take back control in that situation i would love to know

That explains a few of my high readings too. I get stressed out at work too and my readings go quite high and I'm irritable and snappy. Also when I'm worried. :?

thanks Dennis it was my guess that this was happening but as i have not done biology for a few years (and the rest) i was not sure, now i know

anyone got a nice lacking in stress job i can have?

Have a day off today [credit crunch] and reading went from 6.4 to 7.0 between 0515 and 0715

Previous readings on this:

fri 8.8 - 10.3 work
sat 8.4 - 7.6 booze night before
sun 7.8 - 7.5 booze night before
mon 7.9 - 11.6 work
tue 7.8 - 9.8 work
wed 8.5 - 10.5 work
thu 6.4 - 7.0 bed

Have had a bit of a head cold this past couple of days which hopefully explains slight climb in readings, but it looks like work = bad, booze = good :D

i woke before my alarm today with a real adrenalin rush (washing machine stomach etc) i think that this causes me to have a glycogen dump though testing within 15 mins showed a bit lower than other mornings

i am confused/frustrated!
