The purpose of this post is to explain how it is possible to lose weight without strenuous physical activity and without any kind of dieting for weight loss (restriction of food intake, eating particular foods or a particular menu etc)
I don’t think that anyone will change their diet just because of this post, but in any case I feel necessary to say something that I think is very important.
My concern is the people who were for a prolonged time on a restriction of food intake. Resuming normal diet after a prolonged time of restricting their food intake can create negative health consequences.
I will never give any advice about food and nutrition related to illness or dietary health because medical educated professionals like general practitioners or dieticians know much more about that subject than what I know.
I can only suggest that people who are restricting their food intake for a prolonged period of time and particularly the people with negative health condition to consult their general practitioners and/or dietician with a degree in dietetics before any changes in their diet.
Concerning food and nutrition and its relation to healthy wellbeing and treatment of any kind of negative health condition, the only people that I would trust are general practitioners and dieticians with the appropriate degree.
The advice that I for many years don’t trust are advice about weight loss whether are coming from some “weight loss gurus”, celebrity “self called nutritionists” medical doctors or dieticians.
Just a very small percentage of dieticians are involved in weight loss or are associated with the weight loss industry.
The overwhelming majority of dieticians provide an invaluable service to humanity. Some of them provide nutritional services to patients in hospitals and many of them take care of critically ill patients. Others are working in nursing care facilities, schools, etc. Some of them are involved in the research for developing food and nutrition programs to treat illness or promote general dietary health.
The science about food and nutrition and its relation to people’s health has a long history of reliable science, otherwise, in my opinion, many of us wouldn’t be around.
The reason why so many of us are obese and severely obese is because the science of weight management is wrong.
Biomechanics of Walking and Weight Loss
If not all of you then most of you have heard about the benefit of walking for weight loss and for health. Because of that, along with attempt to explain how certain types of walking and how walking on certain types of ground affect the body weight and health, in order to explain by using as fewer word as possible I will try not to mention the facts about walking that are widely know.
About weight loss here are a few notices important to know about weight loss.
There are two types of weight loss:
Health productive weight loss
Health destructive weight loss
Health productive weight loss can be induced by physical activity only. (At the present the weight loss of the fat mass induced by physical activity is misunderstood and my intention is to explain that along with how to lose weight.)
Weight loss induced by physical activity is characterised by the fact that the body losses fat mass. (The size of fat tissues decreasing – regression of the fat mass). By overweight and obese people along with loss of the fat mass, there is a process of regression of the bone and muscle mass. Muscles and bones decrease in size but muscles don’t lose their strength and bones don’t lose their density. Actually, by weight loss induced by physical activities, muscle and bones decrease in size but muscles gain strength and the density of the bones increases.
Health destructive weight loss is induced by weightlessness (microgravity), prolonged bed rest, certain negative health condition like certain injuries and certain illnesses, starvation, certain medication, etc. Health destructive weight loss is characterised by the fact that body loses muscle, bone, and fat mass along with decreasing the strength of the muscles and decreasing the bones density.
For example, by prolonged sitting, the body is gaining weight around the abdomen and in the upper body part. At the same time, the legs lose their strength and their mobility deteriorates, the legs lose weight including fat mass, bone mass and muscle mass. (Along with weight gaining in the upper part of the body, is there significant musculoskeletal change happening? The rib cage is expanding and the upper part of the body is getting a rounded shape. The upper body muscle and bones are increasing in size.)
By prolonged sitting, reduction of food intake will not prevent weight gain in the abdomen in the upper body part. Also, increased food intake will not prevent weight loss of the muscle, bone and fat mass in the legs. People with more physical strength will be less affected by weight gain compared to people with less physical strength by the same amount of time of prolonged sitting.
Compared to the people with average and below average of musculoskeletal strength, the people with above average musculoskeletal strength can spend more time in sitting position without being affected with weight gain in the upper part of the body and weight loss in the legs.
The only way to lose excessive body weight or to reduce upper body weight is to reduce the time spent in a sitting position.
Please note, for some people but not for all, prolonged sitting is the main cause for overweight and combined with the restriction of food intake, prolonged sitting is responsible for obesity and severe obesity. In many cases, obesity isn’t caused by physical inactivity. There are many other ways to get obese by increased physical activity. (Even among competitive Sumo Fighters, weight gain and weight distribution is not due to positive energy balance or genetics.) Many people before they get obese or before they were affected with negative health conditions were not spending much time by being in a sitting position.
The main factor that is responsible for the prevalence and rising trend of obesity are dieting for weight loss and medication for weight loss.
For the cause of severe obesity, the products by the weight loss industry are the only factor that is responsible (diets for weight loss, pharmaceuticals for weight loss, surgical intervention for weight management).
The other factor that is significant but to a far lesser extent responsible for obesity and severe obesity is the man made environment. Living in certain geographical and/or a man made environments demand an increase in physical activity in order not to gain excessive body weight.
Whatever the reason is for obesity, involvement in non-strenuous physical activities is the effective way to lose the entire excessive body weight for everyone independent of physical ability and health condition.
A few facts about non-strenuous physical activities:
There is no significant difference in breathing and heart rate when the body is in a laying down position or sitting position or standing position and walking at leisurely speed, but there are huge differences in the amount of physical activity.
In a still standing position, we are supporting our own body weight. For most of the time we are not aware of that, but the musculoskeletal system is engaged in weight bearing physical activity.
By any type of locomotion, even by extreme slow walking, musculoskeletal system is engaged in weigh bearing/carrying activity.
In a still standing position, and as well as for the time of performing locomotion like walking, running, jumping, etc the musculoskeletal system of obese people is far more engaged in physical activity in order to support our own body weight compared to the musculoskeletal system of normal weight or underweight people.
In a sitting position, we just partly support our own body weight. The amount of physical activity in sitting position depends of the sitting body posture and the types of sitting furniture. (More about the biomechanics of sitting I will try to explain later.)
Just by slightly reducing the time spent in a sitting position makes a significant difference in the amount of physical activity.
For people affected with certain negative conditions and/or for people with decreased physical activity is very effective for weight loss and for improving physical ability. (Walking at a leisurely speed will benefit everyone independent of their physical ability.)
Walking at a leisurely speed and walking at the speed below the speed of leisure are physical activity that will produce weight loss by everyone whether they are severely obese, just obese or overweight.
(Note, for obese and severe obese not every type of walking (brisk walk, etc) is effective for weight loos. For people with a certain amount of excessive fat mass, certain types of walking will not produce different outcomes concerning weight loss, certain types of walking will not have any consequences for weight loss and certain types of walking will further induce gain of the fat mass.
More about that subject, I will try to explain in one of my future posts.)
There is one study done by researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder. “The results shows that people who walk a mile at a leisurely pace burn more calories than if they walk a mile at their normal pace.”
http://www.colorado.edu/news/releases/2005/252.html
Apart from the conclusion about “burning calories” being wrong, it was the most important research study done at that date but it didn’t get too much attention and by many was ignored or ridiculed because at that time (year 2005) and a few years after that, the “calories in and calories” out was an unquestionable dogma.
This research study done by researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder and published in 2005 could open the way to understand the biological basis of fat formation and body fat distribution along with the solution for obesity, but it was hammered because it was against established wisdom.
Despite the fact that everyone will start to lose weight by being involved in this simple physical activity, walking at a leisurely peace is not the sole solution for weight loss and obesity but it is the first essential step towards the solution of obesity.
Those are just the main points about physical activities and weight management.
There is a lot left to explain about any point mentioned above and if someone is interested, I will be glad to explain.
