bit confused

Hi I've just joined the forum but have been type 2 for a few years now. There don't seem to be any apparent problems healthwise, feet eyes, etc need to lose a few kilos though.
What I have decided is that I need to take more control of everything, mostly my blood testing, which has been erratic to say the least!
I've always been confused about when to test and what sort of levels are ok, for example yeaterday before lunch 5.6, today 3 hours after breakfast 8.9 (did have a cup of tea though, would this affect the reading?) I'm the sort of person who would benefit from some simple guidlines as to when the testing should be done and what in general terms would be a good average. Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks v much
Andrew

If you seriously mean to take control, you can't do better than get hold of a copy of "Dr. Bernstein's diabetes solution" this book has it all and will show you where your options are.
Cups of tea, unless heavily sugared, don't put blood sugars up much

Welcome Andrew.

IMO the ideal would be to test upon waking, before lunch and dinner, and two hours after each meal.

If you want a more detailed profile test one hour after each meal as well - which is when, in general, you will have your biggest spike.

My GP once prescribed me enough strips to create a profile with six tests a day over a month and it helped a great deal in working out what was working for me and what wasn't and I'm back down to two tests a day, upon waking, and two hours after my main meal.

Now a good average. My GP advised me to try and avoid post meal readings above 7.

Regards, Tubs.

Hi Tubs
You have a switched on doctor there. 7 is the tipping point. Below it is safety, above it damage begins to the micro blood vessels.
Most doctors are still setting the target at 10!!!
