Hi shandromeda,
It is confusing as to what you can and cannot eat. The reason is that everyone's response to certain foods is different. Some people can eat all the starchy carbohydrates and some find that they can only eat small quantities of one or two of them. If you go to the website I recommended you will see that there is a lot of help there about how to work out what is for you. You need to balance each meal with protein and veggies and or salad. http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes Testing is essential in the first stages of your diabetes and it really is trial and error. A good way is to cut out all these foods,so that you eat meals without bread, crackers, potatoes, rice, pasta , porridge etc. and test your blood sugars and then gradually reintroduce them and test again. If your G.P. will not provide the strips them you need to go back to the surgery armed with an argument as to how you can possibly be expected to manage your condition without the vital testing equipment. You could write a letter to the G.P. If that doesn't work perhaps someone on the forum knows where you can get strips for your particular meter at a cheaper price. What make is your meter?
Hope this helps,
Catherine.

Thanks Catherine i've looked at the web site,my monitor is a Freestyle lite, yep no porridge for me before breakfast i was 9.9 one and a half hours later 14.6,after dinner cauliflower mash quorn fillet,r.beans and brocolli it was 11.00,blimmey this is hard to get right, shan x

The Collins Little Gem carb guide or the Calorie guide are invaluble for finding out how muchcarb is in what food. I remember money is tight, but these little books, cost under £5

Hi shandromeda,
I have been reading through the boards and it would seem that Abbot, the maker of your monitor, supply test strips diectly for about £14.
Perhaps you could try this if it is cheaper. Still try and get them from your G.P. though.
Catherine.

Your dinner had a much lower carb content and your reading was much lower than the one after your breakfast. If you keep lowering the starch content it will go down more.
